Recently, for my birthday, one of my closest friends took me out to see the movie Patriots Day. The movie was about the Boston Marathon bombing and how it all played out. It showed how the bombers performed the bombing, and how Boston police responded. The movie itself was crazy to watch because of how emotional it was to watch the actual bombing go down on the news.
It's one of those things that you remember forever. I remember where I was and what I was doing that day. I was at my grandmother's house watching the marathon and we went out to run some errands. When we got back, the news was explaining what happened and I was in shock. My boyfriend at the time was supposed to go to the marathon to watch it, and thank God he didn't because he would have been in the area of one of the bombs.
Living through this event made the movie so real. The police worked so hard to find the bombers for several days. The movie showed the point of view of the police officers who were in the shoot out when one of the bombers was killed. One of the officers in the shoot out was able to come on set and show the actor playing his character what happened. The crazy thing is that officer should have been shot but the bomber missed him.
The movie also showed how they were able to figure out who the bombers were in the first place and the struggle they went through deciding to release the pictures of the bombers to the public. This movie had so much detail in it and was real to me that it was the first movie that made me teary eyed watching it.
These types of tragic attacks work our officers so hard. Boston was truly strong that week. I loved this movie and I encourage everyone who followed the news during that time to watch it. I was afraid this movie was going to be a dramatized version of what happened, but it stayed true to the events that actually occurred. At the end of the movie they included a memorial for the victims which was emotional in itself to watch. To me this movie isn't just a movie, it's a part of history. It's a sad part of history but history nonetheless. The fact that someone can do such a horrible thing and not care about the consequences is upsetting to me.
I'd like to thank everyone who serves on the force, our EMTs, and our firemen. Without these heroes we would be so much more prone to these things happening. And thank you to all our men and women fighting for our country. My prayers go out to all these men and women who risk their lives every day for our safety and for our rights.
