The Best And Worst Of May For A UD Student

Dages and sunshine are great, but finals...not so much.

For most college students, summer has already begun or is only days away. Many are sighing with relief that final exams are over and those with a few more to go are already packing up their rooms ready for summer to begin at last. For those of us at the University of Delaware, with finals until May 25th, the summer countdown has only just begun. Though it's hard to complain with the relatively easy schedule of a college student, May can be the hardest month to get through with the semester seeming to drag on as the days get longer and warmer. For those that cannot relate, this is all the best and the worst things about being at Delaware during the month of May.

The Best

1. DAGE SEASON

Warm weather means weekends just got that much busier.

2. Summer fashion

Time to break out sundresses and all your favorite summer attire.

3. It's the perfect time of year for UDairy.

If you're lucky, the UDairy truck will be right on your way to your next class and you'll have saved enough room for that third scoop.

4. You get to study for finals outside.

Sure, the wind gets annoying and the heat frustrating, but looking up from hours of brain numbing flash cards to the sunlight and trees makes finals week a little less painful.

5. Delaware is gorgeous at this time of year.

Whether you lay out with a beach towel on the turf or find a bench near the fountain, it's hard not to have a smile on your face.

The Worst

1. The agony of missing dages because you have actual work to do.

Deciding whether or not to make your way to Cleveland or be a responsible student and start in on your pile of work is the same painful process every Saturday and Sunday.

2. Being virtually the only college students whose semester is STILL going.

It's hard not to be distracted with thoughts of summer when for everyone else vacation's already begun.

3. The constant struggle of trying to focus when the weather is this nice.

Distractions are everywhere and you end up getting half the work done than you would have if you'd just gone to the library instead.

4. Sunny days = ice cream. Ice cream = that summer body is even harder to maintain

It's not fair that UDairy is so good and the dining hall has ice cream every day. It becomes a real test of self control that most of us lose every time.

5. Just the walks to classes make you hot and sweaty, which means using the communal showers that much more.

6. The lack of AC in some dorms is the stuff of nightmares.

As much as we love our almost 2 month winter break, it might be a good idea to stay off Instagram for the next couple weeks to avoid the pain of seeing friends sitting poolside and heading to the beach. Just be thankful that in a few weeks you can wipe any thought of papers, labs and final exams from your mind and focus on more important things like how you're spending Memorial Day.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
