One of the biggest nerd wars of all time. Marvel v. DC. Somehow they are considered rivals but I would say one of them is nowhere close to competition. One side has failed miserably and we have seen another rise to incredible heights and the world has enjoyed their work ever since.
Now let's get into this! These movies are probably some of the hottest topics among these two sides right now. DC began it's cinematic debut in 2005 by releasing "Batman Begins," the story of a billionaire whose parents died so he fights to help others who can't help themselves. Being one the first superheroes to come to the big screen it was the start of the superhero movie race. Marvel didn't follow suit until 2008 with the release of "Iron Man," a billion inventor who is kidnapped and builds a suit in a cave after his weapons are used against others. Since then, the war of fans has raged both sides arguing over one or the other. I decided to settle this once and for all.
So how did we end up where we are today with relation to both sides? What brought fame to one and failure to another? The first thing is that Marvel capitalized on this modern hero, they connected with everyday people but also with what people wanted. Then they turned him into a formula for printing money. DC failed in that they stayed with one hero too long and by the time they tried to play catch up Marvel had the entire MCU. All DC could show for it was a Batman trilogy and nothing else they were behind.
In order to maintain and grow as a movie company, creating new movies every few years and connecting the stories is key. It not only allows for larger and more in-depth story arches but it creates a process that fans have to watch each movie to fully grasp the others and Marvel figured that out. However, DC lacked any universe connection and now they are scrambling to create this same thing but they have had so many issues doing so.
First off, DC has an actor inconsistency. It is pretty clear and they also have a lot of confusing setups and ways they do things.
The second DC issue is how rushed they are and it's evident in both of their latest movies. "Batman V. Superman" and "Suicide Squad" got terrible ratings and the chaos and confusion is obvious even in the filming. It's as though they think adding lots of fighting, explosions and good guy versus a bad guy plot lines and that's it will somehow make the movie simply stick. It won't.
Thirdly, DC has begun to try and just copy Marvel in that they are doing these big release timelines and creating a DCCU like Marvel's MCU. They are lacking in originality.
I think it is evident Marvel has done the best job. They aren't rushed, they push release dates back when they see they need to change something. Everything they create is original and are new thoughts coming to life. They understand keeping the actors the same and creating a connectedness that is needed. Don't get me wrong Marvel started from an accidental hit, "Iron Man" was a shot in the dark, but once success hit they ran with it. DC needs to learn that stepping out of their comfort zone makes money and holding back and going old school sinks the ship.
I think if we are honest DC or Marvel fans when it comes to movies the answer is clear. Marvel Cinematic Universe is the obvious winner for the best movies of all. DC is always gonna be the sad little kid who is just trying to be as cool as the old kids. DC is failed hope. One day maybe DC will be able to brag but for now I have one thing to say, Marvel for life!
