The Life Of An Over-Involved College Student

Student council meeting? Check. Accepted Students Day? Check. Statistics homework? Check. A full night of sleep? Eh, not so much.

In general, I am a person who tends to be very involved. I stay busy when it comes to work and school, and I genuinely do enjoy it for the most part, even though some days are more stressful than others. Being involved and busy is what makes me “me.” I love having a full day, even if that means going to class, doing homework, attending club meetings, and still making time to go to a hockey game. If I wasn’t so busy, I would quite honestly be bored. I wouldn’t know what to do with my free time.

Additionally, staying involved helps me become a known face on my campus. I want people to recognize me when they see me in the library or in the cafeteria.

I find it irritating when my peers or adults ask me, “How do you find time for yourself?” or comment, “ Wow, you must be so tired all the time” or my favorite, “What’s the point of being so involved?” Let me begin with this: Yes, I am friggin exhausted all the time during the school year. However, it’s a good kind of exhausted. It is a feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day when I have completed all of my daily tasks. I love what I do, so I don’t necessarily dread my full days. I love that I am busy. Also, I do find time for myself every day. For instance, watching Netflix for an hour or two at the end of each day is something that I do consider “me” time. On the weekends, my friends and I usually find something to do to occupy our free time that is not school related. Lastly, the point of me being so involved in a hundred different things is because it is giving me experience for my future career. I couldn’t imagine going to college to solely take classes, study, and do homework. Obviously, that is a part of going to college, but there is so much more than that. College has so much to offer, and I would feel guilty if I didn’t involve myself as much as I do. The clubs and organizations on campus are here for us college students to take advantage of.

All in all, staying involved in college is a true passion of mine. I have met my closest friends by staying busy on campus, and I have gotten to know faculty outside of my classes and in the honors program as well. Although some days I feel like staying in bed instead of tending to my responsibilities, I wouldn't trade having a crazy schedule for anything.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
