Typically I'd write a long article about systematic racism, reporting, history, “rioting", and a slew of other things that pinpoint people and their chosen actions as our biggest problem, but I realized it would be futile. At this point, we know what the problem is. We know who the problem is. We know what and who is to blame. The only thing we don't know is how to fix it.
How do you convince people that the people they blame aren't the problem? How do you convince people so filled with hatred that they will kill other people that it won't solve their problem? How do you find justice for those who are victims of America's complacency-- her willingness to mask her stagnation and subjugation as an opportunity, her foreign policies as 'moral' and 'just'-- when they don't even realize they are victims?
Facts? We have proven time and time again that no one really cares about facts unless they support their own ideals and predispositions. Voting? Somehow, voting led to us having a President and cabinet that sympathize with the Neo-nazis and White supremacists 'side'. Protesting? Tell me something in America that protesting has changed.
Every movement we have ever had has left people out of it. Civil Rights were more about the rights of men of color than women of color (I also recently talked to racism; she's still alive and well). Feminism decided it was best to redefine 'woman' as pertaining to white women only, leaving women of color in the dust as a casualty of 'progress'.
Our attempts to address the wage gap were quickly stamped out but apparently managed to birth current movements which have also led to minimal, if any, change. From a historical standpoint, protesting and movements do not force the problem to be resolved, but simply placates the masses while it reincarnates itself in a more obscure form.
In reality, we convince ourselves that other people are the enemy. We reduce the problem to that of people's choices and not that of the entire machine we exist within. In what world does a country built on stolen land and the backs of others lead to a future where everyone can flourish? In what world does a government that never originally had the rights of all people in mind side with those that it's been overlooking for centuries? Not this one.
Truthfully, we are looking at a microcosm of the United States' true colors. Neo-nazis can protest with rifles with no problem but a 12 year old Black boy can't survive playing with a toy gun. The United States government and industry is still expecting the Native Americans to take their crapbut this time the justification is industry instead of manifest destiny.Xenophobia and the immigrant scapegoat also remains a living, breathing excuse for cruelty.
Both the Military Industrial Complex and Prison Industrial Complex have undergone renovations and are doing great. Our dear friend structural racism is likely laughing at the petty details of her power and reach -- apparently our media would rather say a car killed people than to give a white, domestic terrorist his true label, but has no problems pushing narratives on victims of color. Our most lasting legacies seem to be the weeds that were borne from our choice of soil, water, and fertilizer.
At the end of the day, maybe we should be looking at our country and its practices and hold it accountable for all the things that it gladly allows to occur under its watch. Because let's be real, none of this should really be as surprising as it is. History repeats itself when nothing is done to address the real problems that lie at the heart of the injustice.
At this point, all that really matters is when are we going to start truly acknowledging and resolving it. When will we realize that we are powerless against it divided? And until an answer is provided, maybe we should all just reclaim our time and continue turning our other cheek and lending a blind eye. Apparently it's what we do best.
