Oh, the Finstagram, or "finsta" as it is more known as. The thing you resisted for so long, claiming how dumb it was, and yet, here you are now with over 100 posts on your finsta. Your 20 closest friends follow your cleverly crafted finsta name, and you would never dare put it on public.
For those of you who don’t know (which is highly unlikely), a “finsta” is essentially a “fake Instagram” that girls make. I have yet to come across a guy with a finsta, but the world keeps surprising me, so I’m sure that there are male finsta’s out there too. The purpose is so that you can post whatever you want (usually inappropriate for normal social media), and only your closest friends will see them. You can post pictures of you and your friends looking incredibly unattractive, slapping the wine bag or an endless stream of hookup photos. Your finsta is what you make of it.
But, isn’t it kind of funny that you create this second, private Instagram account documenting more of your real life than your actual main Instagram page. Your fake account ends up being more real than the one you openly promote, the one with hundreds of followers versus the one with your closest peers.
The creation of the finsta just goes to show you how differently people reveal themselves on social media. On the one hand you have one account highlighting your best outfits, cute brunch spots and perfectly filtered photos, yet on the second account you have smeared makeup, blurry images and a flurry of other things you wouldn’t normally share with the world.
My question is which one is real? Are they both the real you? Who knows. I sure don’t know.
I’ve got nothing against the finsta, in fact, I follow my fair share of finsta accounts and usually get a good chuckle out of seeing what some of my friend’s post. Yes, sometimes I think some of the things posted are incredibly idiotic and I don’t necessarily understand them, but who am I to judge? I don’t personally have a finsta, so maybe I just don’t understand the fun of it.
I previously wrote a piece called "Why Do We Care So Much About Instagram" and I believe the same thing applies to the finsta. There really is no need to make a fake Instagram account. It is something for fun, with no true purpose except for being able to post your pictures that don’t make the cut for your first account. Which, now that I’ve typed that sentence out, is pretty idiotic. I’m all for sharing inappropriate, ugly photos with my friends, but I usually just stick to the group chat for that.
I’ve even seen some finsta accounts that are made for the purpose of pretty pictures of landscapes or photography, that people created because they felt it would ruin the aesthetic of their main page. Or they thought that they wouldn’t get a lot of likes on it or people would unfollow them. Nothing wrong with the photo per say, but if it doesn’t go with the flow of their first account, they don’t want to post it there, but still feel the need to post it somewhere.
Our culture is all about posting, posting, posting. Everything we do and say gets published on some sort of platform, and we get a high knowing people out there are liking what we are doing or what we are saying. We are a post-driven society, and with that comes the good, the bad,and the ugly. But, I guess it’s up to the user to decide which one it is going to be.
