Prologue

It was just a normal Wednesday at Winchester High in Stevensville, Montana. I, Sophiene Porter, was worrying about my Calculus test. I was having lunch with my best friends. We did the same thing every lunch period. We all made study plans, asked about each other’s crushes, copied homework, or just made fun of each other. Little did I know or expect My whole world was about to turn upside down and flip sideways.

In the year 2018 massive unidentified flying object landed in the pacific. From there it broke into three separate units. One headed for Northern Europe, one headed for Africa, and the final headed for Eastern North America. The ships did not physically attack, or purposely cause carnage. A high pitched frequency was sounded out. It wiped out those who did not hide, and that was billions. The rest, well we stood up to them. We began the fight.

"Soph did you finish your Government homework?" Trevor asked.

"Yeah why?" I answered.

"I forgot to do mine. Can I please copy yours?" he begged.

"Trevor this is the second time this week. You need to be able to finish your homework and still be able to work," I told him.

"I know, I try but the boss keeps making me work overtime on the weeknights. Can I please copy?" he begged again.

"Fine, just give it back before class," I said handing him my papers.

"I'm surprised you aren't failing, Trevor. How are you passing all of your classes?" Meagan asked.

Trevor looks sheepishly at me. "She helps me on the weekends," he told her.

"Hey Sasha, are we still on for studying at the library today after school?" Justin asked Sally.

"You bet. Hey, Soph want to join us? Soph?" Sasha said.

“Guys, look outside, there's smoke," I said standing up.

"I wonder what's going on," Justin said. I started looking closer at the smoke. Something did not feel right.

"Guys look there's planes coming to put the fire out," Trevor said.

I took a closer look. "Those aren’t landing. They are crashing," I said scared. The planes were indeed crashing. They were in a downward slope toward the ground. We watched the planes until they were lost behind the tree line. All in a matter of seconds a second and third black cloud joined the first. These were much bigger and pitch black. My survival instincts kicked in I grabbed Megan's hand.

"Hey guys I think we should get away from the windows. Follow me. Run! " I yelled.

My friends knew me well enough that if I was the one leading the run they knew to run. There was only one place I knew to go that was close enough to where we were. We were halfway there when we heard a noise. All of us clutched our ears. I couldn’t hear anything. Staggering against the pain of the noise I found the door to the stairs. I threw it opened and shoved my friends inside and closed the door. The noise was lessened behind the lead door. We all moved our hands and along with the high pitched sound that still grew ever louder we also heard the screams of our classmates. I turned on my phone’s flashlight and ran down the stairs and to another door. I slide it open and pushed my friends inside. A janitor had showed this room me while I was volunteering to help clean up. We closed the door. All of us sat in black darkness and listened.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
