The Importance Of Galentine's Day

A day to celebrate all the pretty ladies in your life.

The Importance Of Galentine's Day

Valentine's Day is known as either one of the best days of the year or one of the worst. For the couples, love is in the air every year around February 14th. Celebrated with chocolates and flowers and fancy dinners, they post pictures to document their burning love. All is beautiful and happy in the world. At least, it is if you are happily in love.

On the other hand, Valentine's Day is known to be a single person's bane. Depicted in the movies, the day is spent crying over a tub of ice cream while bitterly scrolling through all of the annoyingly cute pictures of the happy couples. Maybe if you are lucky you will get a pity gift basket full of candy from your mom. But mainly, the day just sucks because it reminds you that everyone else has a romantic someone who loves them except for you.

But a revolution has recently occurred around this lonely holiday: Galentine's Day. Coined by Amy Poehler's character Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation, Galentine's Day is a day of "ladies celebrating ladies" the day before Valentine's.

Galentine's Day has taken over the scene, and it's fabulous. First of all, it adds a hopeful confidence to all the single ladies. Instead of hiding from Valentine's Day, women now can feel empowered to embrace their singleness and face all the lovebirds and say, "Hey, you are in love and that's great. And I am not in love, and that is also great!" And they can do this with all of their other single friends around them.

But Galentine's Day isn't just for the couple-less gals. It is meant for all women to celebrate each other, regardless of their relationship status. It's a fun excuse to get all dolled up for no one else but yourselves and just have fun with each other, honoring the beauty and company of the wonderful women around you. Forget romance for the night and just love on your ladies.

Valentine's Day has been built up to be a day for passionate lovers, which there is nothing wrong with that. But it leaves out a whole portion of the population. Galentine's Day is reminding the world that there is worth in celebrating being single because it should be something that is enjoyed while it lasts. And it is also a great day to lift up all your girlfriends and let them know you love them, single or not.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
