The phenomenon surrounding the campaign of Bernie Sanders is really something to behold. The way he is mobilizing people is amazing. Even more impressive, however, is his popularity amongst the younger crowd. My peers, many of whom are first-time voters, love Senator Sanders' message. They love his honesty and his genuine care about the issues. And I do, too! I would love to watch him continue to fight the good fight from the highest office of power in our country.
But I have also come to terms with the fact that he may very well not get the chance to do so.
Now, I understand why a lot of us don't want to give up yet. This is the sort of dream candidate that you only ever see once, right? He's fighting for us! We trust him! And, let's face it, those are things we don't really believe about Clinton. Hillary's record is shady for some. She, unlike Sanders, hasn't been hitting these specific talking points her whole life. She has certainly had some catching up to do. That being said, you cannot claim that she hasn't tried. Clinton and Sanders are, no matter your feelings towards one or the other, running almost the same campaign. Yes, there are differences. But overall, they are fighting for the same things. And when November comes, I implore you all to keep this in mind. I've heard so many Bernie supporters claim that they will simply not vote in the general election if Sanders doesn't make the ticket. That they will write him in if they must, or just abandon the process all together.
Essentially, then, these people are claiming that, with the lack of a Sanders ticket, they will become Trump supporters.
Yes, Trump supporters. You see, the whole process is actually very simple. Two people go in, one comes out. And if you aren't voting for one person, you're voting for the other. Refusing to vote for Clinton out of spite is equivalent to voting for Trump (because you know he'll be the nominee, whether we like it or not). This presidency is bigger than your ego, my friends. This President will choose Supreme Court Justices. They will be responsible for upholding our right to marry the person we love. They will be responsible for a woman's right to choose. They will either push our country forward or toss it back into the Dark Ages.
So please. Come November, please put your ego aside. Put aside petty differences. Put aside the past. Focus on the future. Focus on what is at stake. And for the love of God, don't vote for Trump for President of the United States.
