This holiday break, instead of baking pie with your grandmother or throwing snowballs at poor passerby, grab your popcorn and snuggle into your mom’s decorative couch pillows; you have some romantically comedic homework to do. These movies are classics, cream of the rom-com crop (and all available on Netflix. You’re welcome).
Love Actually
This should be at the top of everyone’s rom com list, at any time of year. Sure: it does happen to take place at Christmas time, but how often will you see all your favs in one movie together like this again?
Certainly not in New Year’s Eve. That was slacking. Valentine's Day? With the Taylors? No thanks.
10 Things I Hate About You
This may be one of my favorite movies in existence. Where else will you find Heath Ledger with his natural Australian accent, the perfect angsty 90's teen playlist, and baby Joseph Gordon-Levitt all in one place?
Nowhere. That's why this movie is gold.
The Prince and Me
After you recovered from 10 Things, reunite with Kat Stratford as she falls in love with an incognito prince while attempting to get into med school. This movie has the alternative of Everyone’s Favorite Recurring Childhood Dream.
The Princess Bride
When someone tells me they've never seen The Princess Bride, I don't trust them; not that they haven't seen it, but I just don't trust them in general. This movie is the kind of fairytale you want, where it's really sweet and wonderful, but also incredibly weird to remind you that it's real. Much like your first Thanksgiving home from college when everyone wants to focus on you, but eventually someone will call your great grandmother on FaceTime and your aunt will open up your Instagram and you'll remember it's only 8 o'clock.
This movie is exactly like that.
The Lizzie McGuire Movie
THE ULTIMATE MOVIE NIGHT MOVIE!!!! This movie is iconic to say the least, and a crowd pleaser to boot. Do not act like you're bigger than imagined that you were in Lizzie's shoes and happened to get mistaken for an Italian pop star and saved the day with the power of song. It's like dancing around your room to "You Belong With Me" and pretending you're Taylor Swift; we've all done it at some point.
How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days
This is the one rom-com that Netflix will probably never take down because it is such a classic 2000's goldmine and everyone finds themselves going back to it at some point.
Sixteen Candles
After watching this both on post-wisdom teeth surgery medication, and at 3 am in my dorm room with a bucket of Trader Joe's Cat Cookies, I personally declare this the Late Night Movie of the List. This is the best movie when you're weary and vulnerable, looking for a cry that will not rip your face apart, but will remind you of two very important things: that there is love out there for you and that Jake Ryan is now a carpenter in Pennsylvania.
Breakfast At Tiffany's
A classic. Just a personal opinion, as someone who has seen it: you should not be allowed to go as "I just woke up" or "Black dress chic" Holly Golightly to ANY costume/Halloween/themed party if you have not seen the movie. Having any of the multiple iconic photos of Holly in front of Tiffany's hanging in your room is not justification enough. Cry when she runs through the rain to Paul and Cat. Do it.
Grease
Rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong
Shoobop sha wadda wadda yippity boom de boom
Chang chang changitty chang shoobop
Dip da dip da dip doowop da doobee doo
Boogedy boogedy boogedy boogedy shooby doowop shebop
Sha na na na na na na na yippity dip de doom.
Just saying.

Happy holidays 😎
