The Gratitude Jar

I'm choosing to make 2017 a year of thanks.

The Gratitude Jar
Olivia Avenua

I’ve never been the type to make New Year’s resolutions. Mostly because these resolutions are usually impossible goals that will never be achieved, and then at the end of the year you realize you never went through with that resolution you started on January 1st. However, this year I’ve decided to make a resolution that is so simple and low maintenance, that there is no way I won’t go through with it. It’s a simple resolution, but I think it will have amazing benefits.

I’m sure many of you have heard of a “gratitude jar” and if you haven’t, well, I think it’s self-explanatory. I’m going to keep a jar filled with things I’m grateful for throughout 2017. My goal is at the end of every day, before I go to bed, to write down one good thing that happened that day. Just one thing I’m grateful for. It could be something as simple as, “A good cup of coffee”. Or maybe something as extravagant as, “A family member was healed of their sickness”. Or it could be something in between. Whatever it is, I will write down one thing I’m grateful for at the end of each day.

Why am I doing this? I’m doing this because I think a life of gratitude is a much fuller life. It makes you focus on what you do have instead of what you don’t. If we would just open our eyes more often to the good things in each day, I think we’d find that we live very blessed lives.

Gratitude creating a fuller life will not only benefit me. I think that focusing on all my blessings will make me feel less drained. It will make me feel full, and because of this I will feel like I have more to give to others. I hope it will create a spirit of generosity in me, so that I can be more generous with my time, money, and talents. I hope that the gratitude jar will take my inward focus and shift it more outward.

Psalm 100:4 “Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.”

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
