There was a point in time when the Grammys were one of America's favorite past times. The award show, now upcoming its 60th ceremony, was once accurate and an overwhelmingly exciting way to recognize artists for their hard work and dedication. However, as years progressed and the music industry changed, this show began to lose its credibility.
With fans openly expressing their disappointment through social media, it's clear that the Grammys reputation has been on the line for quite a few years now. Nominations for the 2018 ceremony were recently revealed and while some fans are quite ecstatic that their favorite artists are nominated, others are evidently frustrated once again.
Whose choosing who is nominated and who wins?
The panel and committees who nominate and ultimately decide who wins these awards may not be completely qualified to be making these decisions. Although some have degrees in music and are well aware of what they are doing, others are simply not. This panel is made up of anyone from engineers to professors and the occasional people with music degrees. Since fans are the ones voting and listening to the music, shouldn't they be the ones choosing?
Winning a Grammy and making a speech about your accomplishment used to be something every musician dreamed about. Now, many artists could care less if they are even present at this award show. Some of them, Kanye West and Drake for example, have boycotted the show and wanted absolutely nothing to do with it in the past. It has become inaccurate and lost its true purpose by recognizing the wrong artists and overlooking some of the most talented people in the industry.
This years nominations have proved this clearly and fans have been anything but quiet about their disappointment. Countless artists were snubbed of nominations. Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa and Camila Cabello, to name a few.
The Grammys are nothing like they used to be. Since the panel are no longer able to keep this show accurate, there needs to be a change. Fans should choose who is winning these awards because they are the ones watching it and determining the success of these songs and artists. If the artists putting in the most work and countless hours can't be awarded and acknowledged, why is the show still bothering to air?
