Let me say, if I had to pick a genre of music to listen to for the rest of my life it would not be country.
Unless it was the album The Golden HourKacey Musgraves because it is truly a masterpiece. I have been listening to this album nonstop and probably driving my roommates crazy because it's been that much.
Thank you, God, and Kacey for an album that is not a tailgate dirt road anthem. "The Golden Hour" brings us more than just drinking beers and hooking up with hot guys or girls. We get more than just love done me wrong songs, and the one she does sing isn’t the typical tune.
In “Space Cowboy," there’s a layer of understanding that when things don’t work you don’t force them you let them go and instead of it being an angry rant it’s a delicate reflection on a relationship. She also sings about the sadness of missing your mother and being alone on the weekend...hello relatable!
I know not all country music is the same but the last time I listened to country tailgate bop was the trend. That turned me off the genre for a good bit of time, I think it just all sounds the same but country isn’t the only genre to suffer from this. I think it happens with Pop and Rap music as well, things become trendy and artists pump out what’s popular for the fans. It happens.
The Golden Hourshakes up the scene, the music itself is like a country hippy vibe, very running in a field with wildflowers in your hair vibe. It brings the singer/songwriter genre and the country music genre back together.
The old country style stood out because it was twangy and brought a new sound on the scene, and while this album is completely opposite of twang I think it follows the same track of being a different sound that stands out.
From past albums, we know she’s not one to conform to society’s ideal and she seeks to break from the mold of “small town” ideal but she also doesn’t diss growing up in a small town because those are her roots.
So, thank you, Kacey Musgraves, for renewing my faith in country music and for giving me a new album to jam to.
If I can't convince you to listen to this album, please note that John freaking Mayer gushed over this album as well and if that doesn't say something then I don't know what does.
If you haven't listened yet, get on it!
