I was excited enough to binge watch the new Gilmore Girls reunion the minute it aired the day after Thanksgiving, but I had to wait a couple days. Now that I've seen it, I’m satisfied and have to go back to reading books because it will be a while before another television show feels that good.
I’ve watched reunion shows and movie sequels with skepticism most of my life. I have an intense love for a well-played series whether in the form of a set of novels, television shows, or a movie trilogy. But I am not too fond of a story well enough told that there is sufficient closure in the end, it feels finished, but because it made money a sequel was written that felt forced. I don’t want a forced sequel; I want one that’s worth telling.
I’m relieved to say that the continuation of the Gilmore Girls is a story worth continuing. The town of Stars Hallow hasn’t changed much more than Luke’s diner but with the passing of years some things do give. The writers successfully portrayed subtle changes in life without compromising the authenticity of the original characters. It’s not awkward, it’s comfortingly familiar with just enough freshness to keep the story alive. Some of the closure the fans were gipped out of at the end of the original season finally came with enough open ended elements for us to go back to Stars Hallow without it feeling forced.
I was only disappointed, initially, with Rory’s love life, but I’m over it because of where it took the story. I’m thrilled that I saw almost all of the characters I loved come back. The surprise cameos sure were fun. Some things will never change about Emily Gilmore, but oh the things that did made me happy.
The Gilmore Girls “A Year in the Life” on Netflix is listed as Season One. Will there be another season? I think that depends on the audience response. Years ago shows would end and that was the end of it. Now, Netflix has become the ultimate independent streaming network to petition for shows to make their comebacks. I know this to be true because I was a part of the #longlivelongmire movement (We successfully got three more seasons).
It could end now, but I don’t think I want it to. I believe the writer left a route to pick back up on at any determined point. It could be next year, or in five years and it would probably work. It was a brilliant move. That’s all I’m going to say about that.
