The Future of International Relations

Current global and domestic trends hint at a rapidly changing landscape for how countries interact with one another.

The Future of International Relations

International Relations are quickly becoming an ever-more confusing topic to think about. The United States in years past enjoyed a strong sense of dominance over the world order in terms of how individual states conducted their business with one another. It all stemmed from strong economic dominance between nations and influencing political ties elsewhere to favor democratic ideals and institutions. However, more recently the United States is losing its grip on its dominance over the world order. Rising nations such as China and India are contesting the role of the United States in international relations. There is less of a focus on what happens in Washington and more of a focus as to what happens in Beijing, Tokyo, Delhi and London. This is primarily due to a number of factors that include a diverse economy and weakening US presidency.

As the world economy diversifies, other international actors become more important in different commodity markets. China holds a significant source of strength as the world's largest exporter. Its labor force has generated an economy that can rival the United States and as a result showcases significant competition with man US industries. Most international corporations cannot operate sustainably or efficiently without taking into account other Chinese businesses in the same sector. The United States is no longer in a position in which it can carry the world's economy on its own backs. However, this does not mean that the US is irrelevant. The United States' economy is still the largest in the world and as such would carry devastating consequences for the rest of the world if it is allowed to fail. The goal for other nations is to weaken US dominance, but not its economic output.

The second largest problem the United States faces is its weakened executive strength. The current Trump administration has set a poor example for how International Relations should be conducted. The administrations' actions in mishandling Israel's secrets with the Russian ambassador, deleterious trade policies and rhetoric about Islamic terrorism, specifically towards all Muslims have all led to a significant decrease in respect from other nations. The rest of the world cooperates with the United States more for security and economic trade. However, as the Trump administration becomes more difficult to deal with and negotiate with, the global preference for American goods wanes as well.

In summary, if the United States does not change the way it carries itself politically, then the future of international relations will look less favorably on the US than other rising economic stars like China and India. The current Trump administration has been less than successful in handling International Relation. Instead of projecting an open hand in cooperation in order to ensure American dominance, the Trump administration has sought a more isolationist role in trying to ensure the country's interests, a policy that has been extremely lackluster.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
