The End Part 4

I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't hear her enter.

The End Part 4

As it turns out he did not have much time left.

He was different than the rest I am drawn to. Young but wise in his own way. He was the only one that accepted me and didn't refuse to believe he would reach the end sooner than planned. He had a greater appreciation for the small things. What other kind of human would sit there with a child and watch the rainfall? Knowing that as it fell it washed away all the bad and made way for the good to grow, except it couldn't be away from the one bad thing he desired more than anything else. He wanted more time, I knew this from watching him cry almost every night.

And every night his body would dry out and he would be wracked with sobs but no tears to shed for hours. He was the only one I wish I could give that time to.

The moon was full, but you could not see it behind the rain clouds. Enough light came in that I could make out his eyes. They were wet, just like the sky rained so, did they. I watched as the rain dripped off various parts of the window. I watched them form, I watched them fall, and I watched as they shattered below. Over and over this would happen, and over and over I pondered what it would be like to be a human.

To never have enough time for this world and to meet an end before no regrets could be had. I wondered what it would be like to leave so many people behind that loved you. How do they fill that part of their life? There must be a hole left behind. An empty space that will never be the same. A space shaped specifically for that person, an impossibility that no one else could fill.

I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't hear her enter. I didn't follow the pitter patter of her small feet as she made her way across the wooden floor. I didn't even notice when she climbed onto the bed. I only noticed when her scream pierced the air and tears poured down her face. The older woman came rushing in and switched on a light. She turned him over. The light was gone. He was no longer there. I missed him. I watched the stuffed dog fall to the floor as the woman picked up the girl. She fell to her knees, unable to support herself anymore. She clutched the girl to her chest and they fell apart in each other's arms.

I missed him.

I turned to go when movement caught my eye. He was there. He watched the scene before him from the doorway. His knuckles were white as he clutched the door frame. I turned to the woman, she was soothing the girl. She whispered kind words to make the pain go away, but it wouldn't. It never would. When I looked up again he was in front of me, his dark gray eyes locked onto mine.

"Hello," he said.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
