The Downfall Of Cable Television

Why I stopped paying for cable television.

In the past few months I have often wondered why I am paying for cable. I mean, I kind of know why - but, do I really? It's a waste of money when I watch Netflix and Hulu more than I watch anything else. So, I thought to myself one day... why am I paying for cable? I am a full time college student and any money I can save is a good thing for me.

So, on a whim - I bought a Chromecast. That ended up being the best decision I have ever made. Being as I only watch Netflix and Hulu and majority of apps on my phone like the HBO GO app. It was only right that I got some kind of streaming stick for my television. There's all kinds of streaming sticks out there, such as Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire streaming and many more. I went with Chromecast because I got a deal around Christmas and my mom wanted one, so I said "what the heck" and got one!

Ever since that moment, I knew my life changed for the better. For the same amount that I can get cable for, I have an awesome streaming stick. Netflix costs eight dollars for one television and ten for two. Then you have Hulu that is about eight to twelve as well for streaming, depending on how many televisions you have and you can get around that easily if everyone is not watching at the same time. The HBO Go app is twenty dollars for Game of Thrones and then you can easily disservice that until it comes back, unless you want it longer. Then you have other apps you might want - the possibilities are endless. There is even an app called Sling TV that streams regular TV to your streaming stick, like how freaking cool is that? You can pay however much, they range from $20-50, depending on what channels you want.

That even equals out to the amount cable would be. Hulu even has shows and episodes that are new and the episodes are sometimes the day of on the streaming site. Which, is extremely cool. If you are missing cable and missing the channels that come with Cable then this is a waste - but, all and all, if you don't want that extra cost, then any streaming stick is awesome for you. if you want it for what you already do now, which is watching Hulu and Netflix - then this is for you!

Chromecast is not only for streaming shows, it can also stream music - so, Spotify and Pandora and TIDAL, can be streamed to the stick and you can listen to music while you clean the house and / or doing homework as well. It also has a specific streaming stick for music, if that is all you want to do.

The extra cost that I had paying for cable was simply put to streaming services I watch all the time. Why pay extra costs for cable AND streaming services? All the money I can save, you better believe I am taking it. That extra forty to fifty dollars a month can easily be spent at Michaels with that 50% coupon every other week (because those come in handy).

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
