Today I was talking to my friend's little sister who is six. We were talking about walking back to the store in which her sister was shopping so that "the monsters wouldn't get her." I was then corrected by a 6-year-old that monsters are not real and that no monster would get her older sister. The monsters that live under your bed and have scales, long teeth and big claws may not exist, but there are definitely monsters in this world. Taking recent occurrences into account adds to the long list of monstrous people that walk this planet on a daily basis.
Omar Mateen was born in 1986. He was an American-born citizen with Afghani descent. His father had connections with the Taliban, which many believe could be the reason why Mateen pledged allegiance to ISIS the date that he committed this terrible crime. There are many theories on why this terrible crime happened, and even though it was released that he stated his loyalty to ISIS by calling 911, there are many other possibilities that could also be the reasoning behind Mateen's shooting.
Mateen had been on the FBI's radar for many years because of his terrorist ties. He was interviewed in both 2013 and 2014 but was not deemed a threat at the time of the interviews. He was a member of their databases because of who he had contact with.
There was also an instance that Mateen's father recalled of a trip to Miami that he, Mateen and Mateen's son took. During that trip, Mateen had encountered men kissing and touching each other in public. His father states that Mateen became enraged at this, stating that these men should not be doing this in front of him and his son.
There are many possibilities as to why this horrific event could have happened, which is why no one should point blame at any one certain idea, law or group of people. If it was because of a "lack of gun control," Mateen could have bought those guns on the black market instead of in a store just as easily. No one can state that it is 100% a hate crime because he pledged allegiance to a terrorist group, which doesn't specify hatred against the gay community. At the same time, no one can state that it is because he is Islamic because there are many people who practice Islam who are peaceful. One can not state that radicals (just like every other radical group, ex: KKK are radical Christians) are the majority of that group and represent them because that gives in to the stereotype. No one knows what was in his head, so we will never be able to truly and fully understand it.
People within the nightclub, Pulse, who experienced this massacre describe it as an unthinkable, unjustifiable and downright horrific account. This incident lasted three hours from the time the first shot was fired to the time in which the police were able to get an armored vehicle to knock down the door and get a clean shot at the shooter as well as get the survivors out. Many of the people within the club were found hiding in places that range from the stalls in the bathroom to underneath the bar to hiding under a pile of deceased victims. There were 50 casualties and 53 people injured out of the 300 people who were in attendance.
There were 39 people as well as Mateen who were pronounced dead on scene and two pronounced dead in the parking lot. There were then 11 people who were pronounced dead at the hospital. There weren't enough ambulances to respond to the scene from the surrounding area, so many patients were transported in the back of police cars.
This is now the deadliest mass shooting in the history of the United States. Up until now the deadliest was the shooting at Virginia Tech in 2007 which took the lives of 32 people. The second deadliest at the time was the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School with 27 casualties.
Dyer, the mayor of Orlando, called for the city to come together. He stated, "We need to support each other. We need to love each other. And we will not be defined by a hateful shooter." No matter what Mateen's motives were, he proved to us, once again, that living, breathing monsters do exist. And, just like Mateen, they are people who walk next to us on the street and ride the subway and shop at the same malls. We need more love and less hate in the world. We shouldn't be afraid to go to a nightclub or a movie theater or school. We will not let hatred and fear into our lives. We shall not let it control us and win because love can and will conquer all. Prayers and thoughts are with the victims' family and friends.
