The Daily Life As A ToGo

Working in the restaurant can be the most humbling experience that you will ever have in your life. Or it can be the most frustrating time in your life.

If any of you readers have never worked in a restaurant I will give you a picture of what my average day is like under ToGo in my state of mind.

Walk in and clock in, say the hellos to everyone, give a few smiles here and there. Don on the apron and grab the phone. Now you need to go stock up on boxes because you only have like three left, and knowing my luck I will get calls and not have enough boxes.

Twenty minutes into your shift the phone rings. Yes we do still sell this item. No we do not carry that anymore. Name and description of your car? Okay so you will be coming in a blue car. Thanks.

Places in order, waits for person to arrive even though they just placed the call. Makes more boxes. Remembers that they needed dressing. Goes to get the dressing. Another call comes through. Okay today won't be so slow. Remember the ranch. Oh the first dude is here. Here we go coming through please.

Okay pay all in cash, like I have the money already to make the change. Phone ringing again? Seriously, we have a button that asks for hosts. Okay got the change lemme grab that ranch and we are rolling. I am going, two dollar tip here we come. Phone rings.

Now this guy wants twenty dinners but no drinks? What kind of guy is this? Ugh now the first guy is getting out of the car. I am not incompetent with my job sir I just had three other people call. I am so sorry you had to wait an extra five minutes.

Now the second customer wants to change something to the order after they arrive? What do you take me for? Sure it will be another eight minutes to make the change. No we do not have to speak to the manager. I am so sorry that you did not bother to tell me that over the phone or before you left the house.

Four more phone calls???

I NEED MORE BOXES! STOP CALLING PLEASE!

SOMEONE HELP! I AM DROWNING IN ORDERS!

The phone will ring one more time before I go insane.

Cries slowly in the back to grab more boxes.

And my luck sucks. Sucks times infinity sucks.

Now we are finally getting tips? How much did I make so far tonight? Only $3.29??? THIS IS A GOOD NIGHT!

Now I need some help. Please anyone.

Okay we are finally slowing down. And it is only two hours into your shift.

This will be the longest hour of my life if I get to go home. Now let's make more boxes.

Breathe. Breathe. Breathe.

I get to go home once I clean up, make more boxes and stock up on everything that I am running low on? Gee thanks.

That was the longest forty minutes of my life. Now let us see the damage. Okay I made $387.16 in sales, yet my PPA is only $8.54. That makes complete sense. Now the real moment comes. I made $11.93 in tips and need to give back $351.24. So goodbye to you tips. It was lovely holding you in my hand for a solid three seconds.

I get to leave and enjoy the rest of the two hours of my night. Wait. A. Second.

I forgot the ranch.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
