This is it. We could potentially see the ultimate Catholic Showdown on Monday, April 2.
As I am writing this article, Villanova and Loyola-Chicago are both on their way to the final four. By the time this article is posted and read, it will likely be time for the Championship itself or even past time. I’m cheering for my wildcats, through and through, but I find the possible matchup kind of funny. It’s Jesuit versus Augustinian. Midwest versus Northeast. Underdog versus superpower. To add to the humor, the potential show down would be happening on Easter Monday.
Both teams have dominated their way through game after game to make it to where they are now, and there’s no denying that the future championship likely lies in the hands of one of these two schools. At this point, Sister Jean has become a household name as she’s served as a rallying point for Loyola throughout the tournament, even receiving her own piece of one of the nets.
On the other hand, the past few years, Villanova has been a force to be reckoned with on the court, both during the season and in post-season games. Even if they don’t end up playing each other in the Championship, both final four games are going to be some hella nice games to watch.
I’ve gone to an Augustinian school since 6th grade, so, at this point, I’ve been a part of the Augustinian community for over a third of my life. There’s a bit of a rivalry between the two orders (as much of a rivalry as can exist between two holy orders), and I’d love to see generation after generation of Augustinians and Jesuits gather together for mass and dinner on Sunday, then a potential match up on Monday. Ah, unity.
At this point, my bracket is destroyed. Of course, I have Villanova winning, so (knock on wood) I think I’m good in that regard, but I’d love to see a Villanova versus Loyola game. As this week comes to a close, I’ll be cheering on my wildcats from my hotel room, but I’ll also have an eye on the other game. If I’m right (which is not suuuuper likely, but still), we could see the ultimate Catholic showdown of the decade, and I’m 15/10 here for it.
