“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
Since we were old enough to go to school we have been asked the same question over, and over, and over. In first grade it was a princess, then in fourth grade, it was a teacher. Sometime in middle school I wanted to be an actress, then a director because I realized I was too shy to act crazy in front of a crowd. Year and after year my dreams morphed and changed to how I was growing as a person. It continues to do so.
On average, a college student changes their major up to three times during their entire college career (borderzine.com). It’s not surprising either; it’s hard to decide on one thing to do for the rest of your life, let alone your calling.
God calls people all the time. The Bible serves as a perfect example.
In John 15:16 it says, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.”
Then again in 2 Thessalonians 2:14 it mentions calling, “He called you to this through our gospel, that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
And in Ephesians 3:7, Paul talks about being called, “I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power. Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ.”
We are ALL called by grace. Whether it’s a job, a hobby, or a trip, God calls us. The only thing we have to do is wait. Which is probably the hardest part.
In the book "Uninvited" by Lysa Terkeurst, it talks about trusting God with your life and having faith in His decisions for us. “Will I trust Him to the point where I fully turn the control of my life and those I love over to Him?”
That’s where we strive to be, but it’s also the place we struggle the most. Some days I just want to be a brat and cry when things don't go my way. Completely turning my life to Him can be hard. But it’s oh so worth it.
Moses didn’t want to talk to Pharaoh.
Jonah didn’t want to go to Nineveh.
Sarah doubted that God would grant her a child.
Everyone doubts. But God always provides and takes care of His children.
Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt safely.
Jonah saved the people of Nineveh.
Sarah had a child.
God will care for you like he did Moses, Jonah, and Sarah. He is there for you, forever and always.
So as we go through college, blindly walking in faith, making decisions and praying that it’s the right one, we can rest assured that God has a plan for us. He has it placed in our hearts. It’s that pull we feel when we think of something or do an activity. That amazing joy you receive.
It may be nursing, writing, managing...the possibilities are endless. The point is, God has us. He calls us. We don’t have to worry about the future because He already knows all the good things He will bless us with. We just have to trust in Him.
