I'm extremely excited to talk about one of my favorite music groups; the Black Eyed Peas! It's been a few years since I've heard anything about them. I haven't heard any music from them since their last album, The Beginning, in 2010. As amazing as the universe works, while one day mindlessly switching T.V. channels I happen to turn to an episode of TRL on MTV. During this episode, the Black Eyed Peas were the guests along with DJ Premier and ASAP Ferg. What a great episode. During this episode, Will.I.Am, Apl.de.Ap, and Taboo talked about their powerful new single, "Street Livin", and their super cool graphic novel, "Masters of The Sun: The Zombie Chronicles."
Starting with their new single, "Street Livin", let me just say that the entire world, especially the U.S., definitely needs to hear this song on repeat. I, myself, have been listening to this song pretty much morning, noon, and night. The song addresses minority stereotypes, racism, police brutality, prisons being the new slave plantations, and more. The lyrics of this song will definitely wake you up to reality, and make you realize how terrible things actually are today. Even though this powerful song opens your ears to the sad, and depressing truth about today's society, it does motivate you to do something about it and fight against any injustice. Just listening to this song will give you goosebumps, but watching the music video will take you to a whole nother level. The music video is comprised of photos such as minorities being arrested, black men in prison, and immigrants protesting for their rights. The Black Eyed Peas have undoubtedly made a powerful statement by creating this song and accompanying it with powerful, eye-catching visuals.
Along with their new single, the Black Eyed Peas have also created an amazing graphic novel called "Masters of The Sun: The Zombie Chronicles." The hip-hop geniuses teamed up with Marvel to create not just any action-packed graphic novel, but one that is able to come to life through the use of augmented reality.
According to hiphopdx.com, the Black Eyed Peas collaborated with artist Damion Scott, and Benjamin Jackendoff to create this literary thriller about the main character named Zulu -X fighting against an ancient order while Los Angeles is being attacked by aliens, along with humans turning into zombies. The graphic novel was released on July 19th, 2017 and the AR companion app was released on November 24th, 2017. This may be late news, but hip-hop artists doing something as creative as this is definitely a new concept. I can't wait to get a copy of my own!
