I had the pleasure of covering last week's Democratic debate on the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee's campus and, let's just say, it got real. Bernie started throwing shade and Hillary was throwing it right back at him. As the night unfolded, it became clear that both candidates were on the defense and were ready to strike at a moments notice. The most discussed topics of the night were foreign affairs, healthcare, immigration, political contributions and taxes, giving both candidates ample opportunities to put out some stellar one-liners to stick with viewers. Here are nine of the most tweeted quotes of the night.
1. Sanders' opening statement
"The American people are looking around, and they see a broken criminal justice system; they see more people in jail in the United States of America than any other country on earth—2.2 million."
2. Clinton's opening statement
"I'm running for president to knockdown all the barriers that are holding Americans back and to rebuild the ladders of opportunity that will give every American a chance to advance. Especially those you have been left out and left behind."
3. Clinton's response to Madeleine Albright's comment
"We need to empower everyone, women and men, to make the best decisions in their minds that they can make; that's what I've always stood for."
4. Bernie throwing shade at Hillary
"Once I'm in the white house," said Clinton before being cut off by Senator Sanders.
"Secretary Clinton, you're not in the white house yet," stated Sanders.
"We don't represent Wall Street, we don't represent the billionaire class, so it ends up I'm the only candidate up here, (looks at Hillary Clinton) of the... many candidates, who has no super PAC."
6. Bernie giving the finger wag "nope"
"Senator Sanders voted in 1998," said Secretary Clinton. "Uh, on what I think is fair to call a regime change resolution, with respect to Iraq, calling for the end of Saddam Hussein's regime."
"I'll tell you something that really goals me. I will not shock anybody to suggest that in politics there is occasionally a little bit of hypocrisy, just a little bit."
8. Hillary laying down the economy"I know a lot of American's are angry about the economy and for good cause... yes, the economy is rigid in favor of those at the top."
9. Bernie throwing more shade
"One of us ran against Barack Obama, I was not that candidate."
