The Best and Worst of a Canning Weekend
Allie Beinhacker

Thon, an aspect of Penn State that emphasizes why no school will ever be as great. 46 hours dedicated to dancing, no sitting or sleeping, with nearly 20,000 of your peers is an experience that could never be put into words, which is one of the things, as a freshman, I am anxiously awaiting. One of the things that is at the forefront of the incredible event is canning- when a group of Penn State students stay at someone's house for the weekend and can, or solicit, for money. For a freshman at the very least, here are some of the best and worst things about the weekend away from our beloved home, State College:

BEST

  1. So many cute puppies come up to you.
  2. Sleeping in a real bed
  3. With air conditioning.
  4. Not being woken up at 5am to construction.
  5. Showering WITHOUT shower shoes.
  6. Going away with practically strangers but coming home with a group of new friends.
  7. Bagels.
  8. And most importantly, raising money FOR THE KIDS.

WORST

1. Being away from State College.

2. People cursing at you for mistaking the terrible tragedy of Jerry Sandusky with the charitable act of college students collectively raising north of 10 mil to donate to pediatric cancer.

3. Aaaaaand being away from State College.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
