Dragonflies are beautiful creatures. The details in their tiny bodies are immaculate and I often wonder how something so small can have so many features. I never thought about dragonflies and how beautiful they were until my dad passed away and someone told me the story of the dragonflies. Since that day, every time I see a dragonfly, I know my dad is with me.
The story of the dragonflies follows their lifespan and how they start off as tiny water bugs in the water. But when they grow and develop into dragonflies, they gain their wings and can no longer enter into the water. Now, they have to watch the ones they have been with their entire lives from above the water. This is what it is like for those who have left us and gone to Heaven along with those of us who are left behind.
Those of us who are left here on Earth are the dragonflies who have not yet gained their wings. We are still working tirelessly in this world like those water bugs in the water. We miss our loved ones because they are no longer with us, but occasionally we can see them flying around in the sky. We know they are there, but we cannot reach them...yet.
The ones that have left us to go to Heaven are the dragonflies flying above. They have gained their wings and must watch us from above, knowing they cannot enter the water even though they want to so badly. They fly around above us so beautifully with their wings completing their own tasks. They watch over us and guide us the best they can in our day to day activities.
For those of us who are left here on Earth, it is hard. We miss the ones that have left us. We may even resent them for leaving, I know I did. I resented my dad for leaving me. I wanted him here and I still do, but the simple fact is, it was not his choice whether he could stay or go. I know that if he could have stayed he would, but he now has his wings and I see him in the dragonflies. Whenever I get in my car or walk outside, I see the same type of dragonfly. They are big and orange and they fly right in front of my face or by my head. In those moments, I find myself smiling and whispering the words, "hi daddy."
If you have lost someone you love, I encourage you to read more into the story of the dragonflies. When you see one out and about, know that it is your loved one watching over you. They are letting you know they are with you and will always be there for you.
When you see a dragonfly, know you are not alone.
