We all hold some sort of reservation when we are around others. Whether it is restricting what we say or closely monitoring our actions. Who we are around determines our level of restriction. We are one way with our friends, a different way with our classmates, and another around complete strangers.
It seems that one sees who we really are in its
1. Singing/Dancing
We grab the brush and scream the lyrics. Dancing around like we are on stage, with our back-up dancers following in our footsteps. We know all of the lyrics and the dance is almost perfect.
"Oh shoot, the song is over. Good thing it's on repeat!"
2. Picking Apart Our Flaws
We stand there staring. Staring at our reflection and all of the things we dislike. It's never a happy time, never an enjoyable time. We ask the mirror questions: "Why do I look like this?" "Why are my eyes not blue?" Almost as though we are expecting it to answer.
It won't.
It never does.
3. Discussing Our Strengths
On the days where we feel great about ourselves, we really let ourselves know. "Dude, you are looking SO GOOD right now! Your hair is on point and this shirt! Why don't you wear it more often?" We get closer and really analyze our faces and what exactly it is that makes us look so good. Yeah, yeah, it looks vain from an outsider, but that's why we do it only in our mirror. Since when can they judge?
4. Preparing For An Interview
We stare at ourselves for a minute trying to envision the reflection of ourselves as our potential new boss. And the questions start to flow: "Why would you like to work for me? What makes you a well qualified employee? How much are you looking to make?" And then we reply with, "One million dollars. Shit..I can't say that. I need to be serious. But seriously, what's a realistic number for that? Maybe I should ask my mom."
We go through the entire process from the handshake with ourselves to our facial expressions to the goodbye. We are our own future boss for those twenty minutes and, Hell, I'd hire me.
5. Pictures With Our Best Friend
"Hold up, that's a terrible angle."
"Gross, can I get on the other side of you? This is my bad side?"
"Dude, what is that spot on my face? Is it my face or a smudge on the mirror?....Dude, why is your mirror so dirty.."
"Can we hurry this up? We have to leave."
"Fine, I'm sure I can find a good one out of the 127 that we took.
After we walk away we question how stupid we just looked and are eternally grateful that there was no one around to see our acts of stupidity while staring at ourselves. Good thing our reflections are just as silent as the glass reflecting them.
