The 10 Best And Worst Things About Heading Back To College
Lynchburg College

Summer is over, and it's time to head back to school. Some of us may be rejoicing while others may want just a few more weeks at home. Here's the best and worst things about heading back to college after summer break:

The Best:

1. INDEPENDENCE

As much as we love mom and dad, let's admit that sometimes it's good to have a break from each other. After weeks of being at home, we're ready to see our friends again, and be supported (not judged) if we decide we want Taco Bell at 1 am for the third night in a row.

2. Decorating your room

Decorating your room is one of the more enjoyable parts about moving back into the dorms for another year. I'm always excited to get to pick out stuff for my new space.

3. Seeing your friends whenever you want

Heading back to school means all your friends are too! Here's to many late nights eating pizza and watching trashy tv with your besties.

4. Never being bored

Even if you don't live on campus, there's almost always some university event going on, either at the school or in town, to attend; if you're lucky, it will include free food. Side note to incoming freshman: this a great way to make new friends!

5. Making memories

These are the time's that you'll look back at and be glad you had all the experiences that you did. The people you meet in college are often friends for a lifetime.

The Worst:

1. Having to cook for yourself

One of the best things about being at home is not having to worry about food *sigh*. Alas, it's back to Ramen noodles or cereal every night for dinner.

2. Moving basically everything you own (again)

This is by far, the worst part about living on campus. It takes an entire afternoon to move all your stuff from your car into the building, because everyone else is doing it too, and then you realize there's a bunch of stuff you either forgot or lost in the process.

3. Being broke all the time

It's pretty easy to ask mom or dad for some gas money when you're headed out the door at home, but being in college means mom and dad aren't there to give you money. Welcome to #collegelyfe

4. Studying your life away

The days of laying on the couch and watching Netflix for hours at a time are over. Now it's time to buckle down and get back into the groove of studying and doing homework again.

5. Missing your family

As much as we couldn't wait to get a break from our families, we have to admit we do miss having them around. Hey, at least we can still visit on the weekends!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
