I know you aren’t trying to hurt me. I know you aren’t trying to put me in pain. But I can’t help but think that in some ways, you are. When I signed up for this class, I didn’t think you’d be so terrible. I thought, “why not give it a chance,” and that’s exactly what I am doing. But to my dismay, this semester may be harder than I thought it would be.
Every semester there is a class that you as a student are enrolled in that you are a little worried about. Without a doubt, this is almost every semester. Sometimes classes that we think are going to be great turn out to be sort of mediore or worst-case-scenario: extremely boring.
Being challenged by a class, subject, or professor is one battle. But being bored and falling asleep is another.
These classes come in many shapes and sizes. They can be lectures, seminars, web-based, or small group classes. They can be taught by professors or doctors. The subjects range from social work, politics, basic video, dance, art history, calculus, biblical studies, and so on. Any course you can think of can be a dreadful course to someone sitting around you.
I am writing this today because it is something that every student comes across and I want to tell you one thing: make the best of it. Each class has something new to teach you, things that you might need one day without even realizing it.
Although they are hard to sit through, try to really be in the class while you’re there. Maybe it’s once a week, twice a week, or three times a week, but try to be as present as you can. This will only benefit you at the end of the day.
Remember that pain doesn’t last forever. Suffering is not eternal. Suffering is probably a strong word for these classes, but I know sometimes it can feel like you are suffering in misery. Waiting. Just waiting for the clock to speed up. Waiting. Just waiting for the professor to stop talking.
The spring semester started here at Seton Hall, and I can say there is one class I am going to dread going to every week. But on the contrary, I am also interested –somewhat- in the topic. In my case, I am lucky for this “somewhat” interest. But there are plenty of classes that you will have zero interest in, so try to make them interesting for you. See if you can focus on one part of the class that you might actually be able to use later in life, it could be a specific chapter or topic within the class.
Remember that you only have this class, in most cases, for one semester.
Just one semester!
You can make it through that.
You’re awesome.
