A Thank You To My Freshman Year Roommate
Taran Carrasco

Maybe you have grown up with your roommate for your whole life, or maybe you were high school pals. Maybe the two of you had mutual friends that set you up. If you were like my roommate and I, maybe you found each other on Facebook and somehow it just worked out. No matter how long you have known each other, living with someone is not always the easiest thing. Sometimes you want to watch Netflix without your headphones, or you want to ugly cry by yourself, but 99.9% of the time, having a roommate is the biggest blessing. This year is coming to a close, and I am not quite ready to say goodbye to my sweet roomie. So instead of goodbye, I'm just going to say thank you.

Dear roommate,

Thank you for choosing to tackle freshman year with me. When we were picking out all of our things this summer, I had no clue all the memories we were going to make this year. From running home together on bid day, to stressing out over classes together, you have been here for all my best and worst moments this year. I know I have not been the easiest person to live with, but you have still loved me through it all. Thank you for always being there for me when I am upset. Whether that means you sharing your twin bed with me, or sitting up talking until 3am. Thanks for the time I was crying and you didn't ask any questions, but just got in my bed and hugged me. You always know the right thing to do.

Thank you for all the laughter we have shared. If I had a dollar for every time you fell down, or dropped something this year I would be a rich woman; you make me laugh harder than anyone I know. You laugh at the same stupid Facebook videos as I do, and you get tickled at the smallest things. You just exude happiness all the time, and I am so thankful for that.

Thank you for being a confidant. I know that I can tell you anything and it is safe with you. You have kept all my biggest secrets, and you have not loved me any less. You have been by my side through the thick and thin, and I could not be more grateful.

Thank you for all the little things you do - the little things that make you, you. Thank you for decorating our room for my birthday, and for getting me my favorite candy bar. Thanks for tolerating the "Thunderstorm" noise from my sleep machine, and letting me turn it on at night. Thank you for agreeing to write me while I'm at camp. Thanks for getting coffee with me in-between our classes. Thank you for tiptoeing in the dark when you come in late at night so you don't wake me up.Thanks for loving Newks breadsticks as much as you do, or really just loving Newks in general. Especially, thanks for the jam sessions in the car, because I never felt embarrassed to belt out tunes around you.

Thank you for being you. You are one of the kindest, most genuine people I know. You always stand strong in your values, and you do not waiver in your beliefs. You are always honest, and you never have a mean thing to say about anyone. You amaze me everyday, and you make me a better person by knowing you. Your happiness is infectious, and I am so glad that I got to share our little shoebox of a room with you.

Next year is going to be different. We'll still have some classes together, but you won't be there when I go to sleep and wake up. You won't be right there when I'm feeling down. You won't be there to wake me up when I'm oversleeping. Of course you'll still be here, but it will just be different - an adjustment. I am so lucky to have gotten to share my freshman year with you. You are wonderful in every single one of your ways, and I am proud to call you not just one of my best friends, but my roommate. No matter where life takes us these next four years and beyond, you will always be my original roomie. I will miss our laughs, chats, and snuggles so much, but know that you are always welcome to come over and relive freshman year with me.

All my love,

Your roomie

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
