This is something that has been bothering me these past couple of weeks. I get that everyone loves Christmas. I love Christmas and will overly celebrate, but first there is another holiday. It’s like after Halloween everyone skips straight to Christmas, then the week of Thanksgiving they decide that it’s still in need of celebrating.
Thanksgiving is such a special holiday. It is a time to remember all that you have, and the life you have been given. This is a time to be with family, and share the love you have been given. Plus think of all the yummy food at the dinner table! Some might say they skip to Christmas because you can’t decorate for Thanksgiving. FALSE!!!! Pumpkins, leaves, turkeys, hay, scarecrows, and sunflowers are all great ways to decorate that are still in the fall season, and work with Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving allows us to give thanks for our life, those in it, and the experiences we have. It is far too easy to overlook what we have. Shelter, good food, clean water, nice clothing, transportation, education, freedom, beliefs, and many more are taken for granted. We often look at what we have as normal, and typical. While that may be true for us; it is not so for everyone. We should take a step back, look at what we have, and be thankful.
I for one have a list of things I am thankful for. I am thankful for my family, friends, and every person I have met, because without them I would not be who I am. I am thankful for the food I am given, and the roof over my head. I am thankful for the education I have received, and that I am able to continue that education. I am thankful for my car, and that it can take me home to see my family. I am thankful to be in an organization that surrounds me with support, and upliftment. I am thankful to be who I am, and for everything I have.
Thanksgiving is one of the most important holidays to me. Looking at other holidays, Thanksgiving is the one we don’t receive something from. Yes Christmas is amazing, Halloween is crazy, New years is exciting, Valentine’s is sweet, Easter is refreshing, and The 4th is patriotic, but Thanksgiving is humbling. Thanksgiving is a holiday we need. We need to not receive anything, but look at what we have received, and know that we are privileged to have it.
Honestly I love Christmas too, and I’m counting down the days, but we can’t forget Thanksgiving. This year Thanksgiving will be extra special for me because I get to spend an entire week with my family after being away for months. I will cherish Thanksgiving, but after Thanksgiving is over I’m all Christmas.
You can bet on Black Friday I will be christmas shopping, and our Christmas tree is going up. Christmas carols will be belted around my house, and the Christmas spirit will be strong. However, until then I will be happily awaiting Thanksgiving.
