November is the most stressful time of the year. Between final papers and project deadlines that are quickly approaching, the stress of buying gifts for the looming holiday season, and--if you work in retail, like me--the horror on the horizon of Black Friday, it’s easy to want to skip over it all and jump right into December… which is what a lot of people do. I’ve been hearing talk of “Christember” since November 1, and as someone who’s not really super into Christmas, I’m already sick of the holiday cheer. But, lucky for me--and anyone else who’s not quite ready to end the semester and start decking the halls--we have a whole other holiday to look forward to… Thanksgiving. Here are 10 reasons why we shouldn’t skip over Turkey Day to make room for Jolly Ol’ Saint Nick.
1. It’s literally a day dedicated to eating.
Eating is my favorite thing to do, hands down. We spend a whole day eating delicious, home-cooked food and people want to skip over this? What?
2. You don’t have to buy gifts for *anyone*.
My presence at Thanksgiving Dinner is the only gift you need.
3. Mashed potatoes as far as the eye can see.
4. Sometimes, you don’t even have to leave your house.
Every year, my mom, brother and stepdad do Thanksgiving at my house. It’s virtually stress-free, and fantastic.
5. Getting dressed up is optional if you’re in your own home.
Do you want to get dressed up to walk around your own kitchen all day? Go for it! Want to eat turkey in mom jeans and a hoodie? That’s cool too!
6. Did I mention the rolls?
7. Not only is it a day dedicated to eating, it’s a day that makes you feel grateful for what you’ve got.
Every year, my family goes around the table and says what they’re thankful for before digging into the spread of food in front of us.
8. You can do a good deed on Thanksgiving without having to spend money.
Christmas charity usually involves buying a toy for underprivileged children, wrapping it up and donating it to a church or a local donation center. It’s a great thing to do, but it can get expensive. On Thanksgiving, it costs approximately $0 to go to a soup kitchen to serve food and hang out with those in need. Not only are you providing a hot meal to someone who needs it, you’re giving them some company on a day that’s all about being with others.
9. Thanksgiving is all about being thankful for your life, your home, and your family.
Even if we lose sight of all that thankfulness 12 hours later to go break down the doors of a Walmart for Black Friday sales…
