What's Thanksgiving If You're Not Giving Back?

The best way to spend Thanksgiving is by giving back to the community and spending time with the one's you love.

For the past couple of years, I have volunteered at the Equinox Thanksgiving Community Dinner Event at Empire State Plaza. It started as a way to fulfill my high school community service hour requirements and has now become a tradition that I intend to do complete every year I am able.

“What is Equinox?” you may ask. Well, Equinox is a nonprofit community organization in the Capital Region that serves the homeless, individuals dealing with chemical dependency or domestic violence. Annually on Thanksgiving, Equinox provides a community dinner for 10,000 people, including the homeless and those that are just lonely. The night before, hundreds of giant pans of typical Thanksgiving foods are prepared and stored in freezers.

My job is to be a "runner" where I would run from the freezers with a cart filled with these pans of pre-cooked food to the front of the building where the tables would be located. By pre-cooked, I mean that copious amounts of volunteers spent the past night cooking all of the donated food to create an elaborate meal. At these tables, other volunteers would be scooping out portions of food from the pans onto plates in an assembly-line-like fashion before being handed out to the thousands of patiently waiting recipients.

Equinox impacts the community in a big way every year with their community Thanksgiving dinner. As a volunteer for Equinox, I assist in making that impact and by providing food to the homeless. At the same, I get to meet new people and form connections. I have done Equinox the past two years with my friends from high school, including my boyfriend who has been volunteering for Equinox with his family since he was little. I have been able to bond more with his family, as well as meet some of his family friends. By volunteering on Thanksgiving, it enables me to truly think about everything that I am grateful for, as well as push me to give back to my community more.

So I encourage you all to go out this Thanksgiving season, though it is a little late, and do something that not only benefits your community but leaves you feeling satisfied!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
