Thanks For Being My Mom, Mom
Elizabeth Aroune

You really are the greatest mom in the world. You’re my role model, and whom I aspire to take after. You have taught me so many lessons in my 19 years, and I am eternally grateful for you.

Thank you for:

  1. Teaching me how to do laundry way before college.
  2. My love of reading.
  3. Cooking comfort food (mmm, chicken parm).
  4. Staying up for me when I went out on dates.
  5. Showing me how great music is (Dixie Chicks in the car my entire childhood).
  6. Countless scary movie nights with the whole family.
  7. Letting me learn my lessons from experience.
  8. Telling me that it was his loss.
  9. Encouraging me to do well in school.
  10. Coaching me in sports (SMS field hockey ruled).
  11. Taking so many pictures throughout our entire lives, and keeping photo albums.
  12. Listening to me vent about anything and everything.
  13. Rubbing my hair when I cried.
  14. Letting me third wheel you and Dad on dinner dates.
  15. Teaching me responsibility.
  16. FaceTiming me to show me the dogs.
  17. Telling me stories and experiences from when you were my age.
  18. Loaning me the minivan on endless occasions, and then giving it to me and my sister.
  19. Loving Dad the way you do.
  20. Binge-watching Netflix with me (Especially "Criminal Minds" marathons all winter break).
  21. Comforting me when I fail.
  22. All the advice you have given me.
  23. Loaning me gas money.
  24. The compassion you have instilled in me.
  25. Being a great teacher, not just to me and my siblings, but for your students every year.
  26. Sitting in dressing rooms, exhausted, when I still couldn’t find a formal dress.
  27. Being honest with opinions on said dresses.
  28. Being honest with everything, actually.
  29. Being as excited for my successes as I am.
  30. Snapchatting me when I’m away at school (Yes, you’re very hip).
  31. Embarassing me (it is your job) through middle school.
  32. Cheering me on at sports games, scholarship banquets and poetry readings.
  33. Driving me around everywhere.
  34. Trusting me to make my own decisions.
  35. Being proud of me and telling me that.
  36. Loving me unconditionally.

I am so proud to call you my mom.

Love,

Your daughter

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
