To some, dogs are just pets. They are animals that live in your house, whom you have to feed, take for walks, and give attention. Dogs wake you up at five in the morning when they have to go to the bathroom, and they don't really consider the fact that you might be sleeping. They bark incessantly at the sight of a squirrel, or any peculiar sight for that matter, and they can barely control themselves when they are asked to be quiet. Dogs jump on you, lick your face, and have no respect for your personal space whatsoever. But with all of these habits and qualities, we grow to love them more and more. This is because the truth is that your dog is much more than just your pet. Your dog is your best friend.
Dogs are the best adventure buddies. They will seriously go anywhere with you, and as long as it includes a walk or a car ride, they'll be excited the whole way, too. There is no better feeling than driving with the windows down on a breezy summer day as your K9 pal shoves their head out the window and lets their tongue dangle against the wind. That's the thing about dogs; it doesn't take much to make them happy. They're happy with the simple sound of their treats rattling around in the bag. They jump for joy at the first utterance of the word "walk", and they're completely satisfied with a mere belly rub. The best part about a dog's ability to make the most out of life is that it so easily carries over to you. For some reason, a dog's happiness is so effortless and sincere, yet it can so easily overtake you.
Dogs are the best therapists. Somehow, by some mystery, your dog knows when you're feeling down and they will be right by your side to cheer you up. Whether you're crying your eyes out or simply slumping over in your seat, your dog genuinely wants to make you feel better. He will lick your tears and lift your spirits. Before you know it, you'll no longer feel sad. Just like that, your mood has changed and you owe that to your furry friend.
Truthfully, many of us take our dogs for granted. We pay such close attention to all of the burdens that having a pet places on us, that we often forget to appreciate all that our dogs do for us. We must remember that while these pets are only a small part of our lives, we are a dog's entire life. That hits deep. We have the opportunity to give our best friend the best possible life in return for the many ways that they enhance ours. As you're reading this, I hope you're thinking of your very special furry friend, and I hope you're thankful for their company.
Please go give your pup a hug and tell them you love them, because even if they can't say it back, they show you they love you every single day.
Sending love to my best friend, Brandie. XO
