13 Things I Forgot To Thank My Teachers For

When I became an education major, I knew that there were things I would want to repeat for my future students that my teachers had done for me, like giving stickers when they saw a good deed or talking to me after class when I was having a bad day. When I got to the part of college when I started teaching and doing lesson planning for my own students, I realized something that really bothered me, not only as an education major, but as someone who's had the opportunity to have some amazing teachers in my life. I realized then that I had forgotten to thank my teachers for everything they'd done for me that had gone unnoticed.

At the end of the year, teachers receive thank you notes and gift cards for their time, but I never thought to thank them more often for everything they did for me on a daily basis. So for any teacher who has ever had an impact on my or someone else's life, here are the things I wish you knew I was and always will be grateful for:

1. All the money you spent on materials and supplies, making sure I was learning in the best way possible, no matter what.

Extra notebooks, folders, hundreds of markers, and thousands of pencils.

2. The hours you spent on only one day of lesson plans, creating the best lesson possible to make us passionate about what we were learning.

3. All of the professional development seminars you sat through because you always wanted to be better at helping your students.

Forced or not, you did it, and I'm convinced you may have even loved it.

4. For knowing when to be my friend and when to push me harder.

Not laughing at me like everyone else when I called you "mom" must have been tough. You taught me how to be inclusive of all people.

5. Your patience when I had no idea I was being so irritating.

Did I really need to learn to tie my shoe during read aloud? Did I have to pass notes with my friends during your lecture? No and no, but I did, and I'm sorry I didn't learn manners more quickly.

6. The time outside of class that you spent thinking about the right strategies to teach a lesson that fit everybody's learning style.

Writing in shaving cream is still on my list of the top 10 best things to happen at school. Singing songs to remember Spanish? I'll know those for the rest of my life. And how did you make chemistry equations fun?

7. The faith you had in my progress when there was no proof to show.

How many times can I mess up on calculus before you give up on me understanding that chapter? The limit does not exist.

8. The endless amount of sticky notes and notes on your phone from when you had ideas for class at random times.

9. The thousands of hours in your life that you sacrificed finding the perfect lesson or doing all of the extra things you did because you wanted to go above and beyond for your students.

10. Teaching me skills for school and life.

Like how to be a civilized human in public, or just how to function, in general.

11. The days you spent feeling sick but still came to school, because you wanted the lesson to be perfect and didn't want to leave us feeling abandoned or let down.

12. The intentional encouragements that eventually helped me have the confidence to do things I thought were impossible for me.

From the perfectly timed multiplication tables to getting into my dream college, you believed in me.

13. Thank you for taking the time to know me for me and not just another number.

The most important of them all. Because you made me feel special, I cared about and came to love school.

To the many amazing and passionate teachers that are not thanked often enough, thank you for making school fun and meaningful when it wasn't always easy. I hope that even on the hardest days, you remember how much of an impact you have on the world.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
