Thank You, Phi Mu

A thank you letter to my favorite sorority.

Thank You, Phi Mu

I've been a Phi Mu for two years now, and honestly I wouldn't change a thing. I decided to do something different when I went through recruitment. I didn't go where most girls from my hometown went, and I didn't join the same sorority as my sister. I wanted to start over, and Phi Mu let me. So thank you Phi Mu, for everything.

Thank you Phi Mu for the fantastic girls I've met. Never once have I felt alone or unwanted. They're the most genuine people I've ever known, and I couldn't be happier every time I walk into the house. They make me the person I want to be and what's better than that? I can't imagine not being surrounded by the people that fill that house.

Thank you Phi Mu for letting me be able to call these girls my soul mates. (Yes, I have more than one.) They make me so happy and the memories I've already made have changed my life forever. I've learned so much from all of them. I feel loved every time I walk into the house.

Thank you Phi Mu for supporting a philanthropy that means a lot to me. To be able to see firsthand where all our hard work goes is a great feeling. I'm so happy we are able to put so much time and effort toward Our Lady of the Lake Hospital right here in Baton Rouge because they are a CMNH (Children's Miracle Network Hospital). Helping out the community is something I've always loved to do. And getting to the positive attitude of the children who have gone through so much is life changing. It gives you a new perspective on life and makes you grateful for your health.

Thank you Phi Mu for being fun. What do you mean fun? Like it's a constantly happy, laughing group. If you know me, I laugh all the time. Having friends to laugh with you is the greatest. We all love life, we all want to just have a great time and the minute you hang out with us, you can probably figure it out really quickly.

Thank you Phi Mu for letting my sisters make me a better person. They push me and support me, which is a huge game changer. College is hard, but they make it a little easier because they've been there through all of it. They've supported me through all my decisions. When life gets hard, they sit me down to talk about it because they truly care if I'm okay. If something happens to anyone, we rally together because we are a family. We won't ever have to go through something alone. And when there's a celebration, we make sure to celebrate.

I love my sorority, and I love my sisters. They've helped me become the person I always wanted to be, and I can't thank them enough.

So thank you, Phi Mu (again).

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
