Thank you, best friends

A Thank You Note To My College Roommates
Amy Aroune

College can be overwhelming, confusing, exciting, and a little bit of everything. Having roommates that have become my best friends has been a huge blessing, and I don’t thank them enough for all they do. So, thank you.

Thank you for not judging me. I know my off-key singing, morning breath, and 3 a.m. ice cream cravings are things worth judging, but thank you for always accepting me. Thank you for always waking me up in the morning, because we all know my 10 alarms never do the trick. Thank you for helping me choose outfits, and then sharing your clothes when I don't like any of mine. Thank you for sharing ice cream and tears with me and for holding me when I need a hug and am homesick. (My mom thanks you for this one too). Thank you for dealing with my sassiness and crankiness, because I know sometimes I can be a lot. Thank you for giving me necessary study breaks; the chemistry can always wait.

Thank you for sitting on the couch and just talking for hours. I really value hearing about memories with hometown friends, traditions with your families, and dreams you're aspiring to. Thank you for going to events on campus with me and doing “lame” stuff together. We always end up making the best out of everything. Thank you for accepting my weird habits. Thank you for online shopping with me at odd hours of the night. It's so much easier to not regret your unnecessary spendings when you're not alone.

Thank you for dance parties when we’re stressed. Thank you for nights in with movies, blankets and snuggles. Quiet nights do wonders for our sanity. Thank you for always caring about how my class, meeting, or day was. Thank you for being honest when I didn’t want to hear it. You guys truly give the best advice. Thank you for binge watching TLC with me when we’re all avoiding homework. Thank you for always answering random questions. Thank you for being your individual selves.

You two are beautiful, kind, and so uniquely you. I am grateful each day to live with my best friends. It's a fun, whirlwind adventure, and I wouldn't rather do college with anyone else!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
