Upward Bound is a nationally funded TRiO program. It began because of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 in response to the administration's war on poverty. Upward Bound has been around for 54 years. They give high school students a chance to learn about college. If Upward Bound wouldn't have done that for me, I have no idea where I would be today,

Here is a short history for you. I was a part of Upward Bound from the end of my freshman year to the end of my senior year of high school. I have been given the opportunity to do many great things with them. Also, I got to work for them after I graduated. I got to give back to the program that gave me so much. So here's a thank you letter to the program that changed my life.

Thank you for giving me a chance that I otherwise would never have. You opened your heart to me and accepted me with open arms. You gave me a chance to learn. It was a chance to learn about other people's beliefs, lives, hopes, and dreams. I learned so much about myself while I was there with you. I am a mentally stronger person, I am more socially aware, and I have become a better leader. I think more of others and care more deeply about them. I have become the best of friends with people that I would otherwise never have gotten to know.

Thank you to the teachers and the mentors that I had. Thank you, Darlene, for giving me the chance to learn and for giving me the love of learning. Thanks to that, I am where I am now. Thank you, Jacob, for giving me the chance for self-love. I am proud of who I am becoming because of you. Thank you, Sara, for giving me the love of writing and literature. You have made me open my eyes to the many amazing parts of English. Thank you, Ivy, for being a great friend and mentor. You have made me better than I was before I came to you. Thank you, Cortney, for giving me that competitive edge. I know that I can compete on any level because of you.

So here's my thank you letter. Upward Bound, you are a game-changer. You have blessed many and I hope you continue to do so.

Always and forever,

A Grateful Upward Bound Alum

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
