Recently, I was notified by the Facebook security team if my information was being used by someone else. They showed me my profile and the someone else. I stared at this for quite some time thinking: "Is that me?" or "Maybe that person and I just look a lot alike."
But sure enough, that girl in the profile picture was me. I quickly reported it and Facebook searched the "girl's" name and there "I" was. The cover photo contained a selfie I took in my Freshman year of high school and the profile picture I took was my recent headshot I got done here at Merrimack.
In the moment, I felt like Nev from Catfish trying to dig through this profile. The account must have been recently created because the person had no friends or any other postings. I laughed at the fact that this thing I saw on TV where people create fake profiles, was in some way happening to me. The living location of this person was in France, so if Facebook never notified me, I would have known about this "girl" and they could have been using all my pictures for years to come.
A couple hours later, Facebook notified me that the account was deleted. So thank you Facebook security team, for helping catch this catfish. Though I will never know who was behind that profile, I am glad that Facebook has made it a priority to sift out those who are fake. Who knows? Maybe the show Catfish will be different in the future, as Facebook has made their own team of Nev and Max.
