A Thank You To My Little Brother

Oh, brother.

A Thank You To My Little Brother
Mackenzie Deak

Little brothers are an interesting thing. Whether they're one year or six years younger than you, you either want to argue excessively or have them be your partner in crime. As much as they make it their life mission to make your life miserable (and vice versa), you know they're ultimately doing it out of love. They challenge you and make you want to be the best role model you can be. This is for you, little brother, because you'll always be my first best friend.

Dear little brother,

Thank you for always being there. I know that if I ever need to talk about anything, as crazy and dramatic as it may be, that you'll listen to me. Thank you for accepting me for who I am. I mean, you're my sibling so you kind of have to anyway, but that's okay. Thank you for your honest opinion. Because you're not afraid to say what you think and that makes you who you are. Thank you for (partially) forgiving me for being mean to you when we were little. I think that the older we've gotten, the closer we've become and we're only going to continue to grow. Thank you for teaching me how to be a sister and a leader. I wouldn't change being your older sister for the world and I'm always learning new things from you. Thank you for singing along with me in the car and listening to all my random stories. As many times as I tell them you never say a world and I appreciate that. Thank you for your sense of humor. You are probably one of the funniest and wittiest people I know and you never fail to make me laugh out loud. Thank you for always looking out for me. Even though you're younger, you're way bigger than I am and super protective. Thank you for taking my overbearing sisterly hugs like a man. You don't realize how much I actually miss you while I'm at school. Of course there are so many other things, but these are just a few.

I may be away at school, but I know that you'll figure everything out eventually. Maybe now it seems like it's you against the world, but it will all fall into place. You're smart and I know that you'll discover your passion one day. And I can't wait to watch you continue to grow, although hopefully you don't get any taller. I'll always support you and I'm only a phone call away.

It's weird not having you at school with me but I know that I'll see you soon every time I come home. Don't lie, you know you miss me while I'm away. Although you may be way taller than me now, you will always be my "little" brother. Thank you for being my little brother and I love you so much.

Love,

Your big sister

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
