A Thank You Letter To My College Friends

It's a bit sentimental...but they helped me so much this year.

A Thank You Letter To My College Friends
Madi Carlson

First off, I'd like to thank each and every one of you for positively impacting my life.

We have all gone through so much change this year, some more than others. At the beginning of our first semester here, we were all nervous just-out-of-high-school "college" kids not knowing what was going to happen over the next week, let alone the academic year, and now...look at us! We have finished our first year of college and managed all of the challenges that were thrown our way.

I couldn't have done any of it without you.

Thank You For...

All of the jokes said (that may...or may not have been inappropriate 99% of the time) and all of the inside jokes that were made that kept us laughing for hours. With all of us together, our jokes and puns all bounce off of each other...usually ending with us all crying because we are laughing so hard. These moments will never be forgotten, and will be continued next year.

Being optimistic 99% of the time, even though we may be drowning in debt and homework. We made the most of of every opportunity we had! I loved our little road trips, Qdoba dates, coffee stops, and more. The moments only make me more excited for next year and continuing these fun (and random) traditions.

Our movie and t.v. show marathons...The Bachelor and American Horror Story will always hold a special place in my heart. The simple moments together, deciding if Raven or Vanessa were the better fit for Nick, are some of the best memories. I loved being able to relax and destress with some of my closest friends, watching some of our favorite shows.

Our wonderful hikes...with our crazy Wisconsin weather, February became April and we got to start going on hikes on the trails close to campus. These walks were not only fun forms of exercise, but also dog-petting opportunities! Adventuring together after our daily classes and being able to talk about life was so much fun on these hikes. I cannot wait to continue those hikes together in September <3

Saturday football games! We made sure to attend as many as possible before the season ended and I'm so glad we did! I definitely had no idea what was going on during the game. Special shoutout to Emily who ever-so-patiently explained football to me! We also entertained ourselves by naming all of the cheerleaders and telling their life stories, along with naming deceased grasshoppers and randomly bringing that moment up for the rest of the year. These games not only brought us closer, but also allowed us to gain school spirit and wear as much purple as possible.

Helping me (and the rest of the gang) out whenever any of us needed advice, a hug, or just someone to vent to! College is all about new experiences, education, and finding yourself, which all involve change. We took on new experiences together, as a group. When one of us wasn't there, the group wasn't the same, we held each other in place. Having you all by my side during all of this change has helped me more than you could ever imagine.

These random moments and memories brought us all together, and I am so thankful for that. Overall, I am beyond thankful for you all. The memories we've made together will only grow. I miss you all already, see you in September.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
