Ten Ways You Know You're A Sigma Kappa At SHC

Sigma Kappa is the newest sorority on Spring Hill College's campus. It became an established colony here in 2014. At first, the main reason I joined this sisterhood was because I am really passionate about finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, since my grandmother passed away due to a similar disease. Now, I cannot imagine my life without it. Not only did joining this amazing sisterhood give me the resources to become an advocate for finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and to become a successful college student, but I have also made over one hundred lifelong friends whom I am proud to call my sisters. It is so cool to think that throughout the United States, there are over one hundred collegiate chapters, and a ton more alumnae chapters. This means that in the United States, I have at least one thousand more sisters who have the same values that I do. Sigma Kappa has given me my very best friends and future bridesmaids. It feels really great to be a part of something bigger than myself, striving everyday to make positive change in the world. If you are reading this and are a Sigma Kappa, then you will relate to the list below of the ten ways you know you’re a Sigma Kappa.

1. There are five women whom although you've never met, they hold a special place in your heart. These women are none other than Mary Caffrey Low, Elizabeth Gorham Hoag, Ida Fuller, Frances Mann, and Louise Helen Coburn.

2. You have painted a canvas with the words “One Heart, One Way” at least once, and it's proudly hanging up in your dorm room or apartment.

3. Personal growth, service, friendship, and loyalty are basically your favorite words. You strive for these four aspects in your everyday life.

4. Lavender and maroon are your favorite colors and you wear them constantly. And how convenient is it that our official flower is the wild purple violet? #TEAMPURPLE

5. You have tried effortlessly to draw the heart/flower thing and failed miserably.

6. You own pearls that you really only break out for Preference Day and Founder's Day.

7. A main reason you joined in the first place was probably because of the philanthropies. From the Sigma Kappa Foundation, Inherit the Earth, Gerontology, Maine Sea Coast Mission, and the Alzheimer's Association, you care passionately about not just one, but all of them. Which by the way, the first letter of each philanthropy spells out SIGMA. Cool, right?

8. Even though we don't have houses on campus, we still live in pods and apartments together because sisterhood.

9. You incorporate ΣΚ into words and have no shame. RESPΣΚT, GREΣΚ, etc.

10. Sigma Kappa: "It's borrowing a skirt from Natalie, a blouse from Ellie, shoes from Isabella, a necklace from Stephanie, wearing it on a date and passing it all off as your own."

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
