Ten Things Girls With Short Hair Are Sick Of Hearing

No, I am not a boy.

1. "Have you ever thought of growing your hair out?"

Yes I have thought of growing my hair out, just like you have thought of dying your hair purple, but obviously neither of us have done that yet.

2. "It must be so easy for you to get ready in the morning."

Ha! If I could compare my hair to anything in the morning, it would be a mix of dash from The Incredibles and Mike Score from Flock of Seagulls. That is not exactly what you would call easily maintainable without a shower, or at least water, a brush, and a lot of hair product — and I usually end up just putting it in a headband.

3. "Doesn't anyone ever think you’re a lesbian?"

Most of the time, my initial interaction with people isn’t, “Oh, hi! Nice to meet you. I noticed your short nice hair, are you a lesbian?” Just like not all lesbians have short hair, not all girls with short hair are lesbians. (but high five to those who are both)

4. "What made you want to make such a big decision?"

I have mixed feelings about this one; I love who people want to know my story, but half the time people expect me to have gone through a substantial change. I get tired of simply having the answer: I don’t know, I just decided to do it one day! Does someone have to go through a mid-life crisis or breakup to chop their hair off?

5. "What does your boyfriend think about your short hair?"

Well, for your information, he loves it. But why should that matter? I have short hair because I love it, not because someone else does or does not. I make my own decisions with my body, and my head and my boyfriend loves me for whatever I chose to do with it.

6. "Aren’t you worried someone is going to mistake you for a boy?"

Am I worried? No. Does it happen all the time? No. Has it happened? Yes. But do I honestly look like a boy to you? I have been called sir by grocery store employees, and waiters who weren’t paying attention. However, someone else's mistakes and naivety does not control what I think about myself. I have more important things to worry about.

7. "I don’t like short hair, but I mean, I guess it looks good on you."

How many people with short hair do you say this to, are you being honest, and why are you telling me this? Round of applause for your opinion, please dispose of it elsewhere.

8. "Have you ever thought of shaving your head?"

Just because my hair is short, does not mean it is going to get shorter. Getting a pixie cut isn’t a gateway haircut to shaving your entire head. I might not have much hair, but I still have it and I am not planning on losing it any time soon.

9. "You look exactly like Miley Cyrus!"

First of all, I did it first. Second of all, no I don’t. Not all short haircuts are the same. People seem to lose their attention span and allow the actual appearance of someone to go right over their heads when it comes to details like that. I do not look like Miley Cyrus, but thank you for the compliment! I think ...

10. "You would look so good with long hair."

My hair is thin, piecey, and not to mention incapable of growing past my earlobes. Just because the majority of the female population has long hair and looks good with it, does not mean I would. My hair does not grow like yours does, but thank you for insinuating I am beautiful regardless of my hairstyle, that is exactly what I have been trying to tell you!

There have been so many occasions that people have disliked or regarded of my hair negatively, but at the end of the day I wouldn't trade myself, my hair, or my decisions for the world.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
