Ten Children's Authors to Reconnect With This Summer: Part I
Reading is a crucial part of a child's education. It is a formative part of cognitive ability, and allows the child to improve their emotional and social understanding through stories. If you have a younger sibling, cousin, niece/nephew, child or grandchild, read to them this summer.
Children's books are not just for children. They are stories that can be enjoyed time and again by everyone, regardless of age. It is important to revisit the books of your childhood, as there is always something new to discover.
Below is a cross section of authors that I have had the privilege to re-read again as an adult. Some may be familiar, others new. In either case, enjoy!
1. Shel Silverstein
Shel Silverstein is a colossus of Children's literature. His opus includes several delightful tomes of poetry and classic children's stories. In addition to his writing, Silverstein also includes illustration to accompany his works, and stir the imagination. His works are great for all ages. Many of his poems are suitable for memorization, and make great fillers for Valentine's, Mother's and Father's day cards. To date, 13 volumes and stories have been published, with a new book Runny Babbit Returns due to publish in September. For newly acquainted readers, I would recommend reading The Giving Tree, Where the Sidewalk Ends, and A Light in the Attic. For readers who enjoy a little bit of nonsense, Runny Babbit is a must read.
2. Jan Brett
Jan Brett is a wonderfully prolific author. Her story books are a fantastic universe of children's literature. Her books are unique in the whimsy and detail she provides. Brett's works are the perfect selection to reread, and to share with children fascinated by nature, animals and fairy tales. Within each of her stories are intricate illustrations that present the story in an awesome display of color and artistry. On top of the main story, are side stories illustrated in the frames of each page. Jan Brett is the author of the classic The Mitten. Her career has spanned several decades, and continues with the release of a new book in August of this year.
Brett's Holiday treasures and retelling of classic fairy tales make wonderful birthday and Christmas gifts that will provide a lifetime of joy. Her Valentine Bears book makes a whimsical and romantic gift. Every child and adult should read at least one Jan Brett book in their lifetime.
3. Tomie dePaola
No Childhood is complete without the wonderful world of Tomie dePaola. Over the course of his career Tomie has written and Illustrated over 200 children's book, and at the young age of 82 is still going strong. Within his opus readers young and old can encounter a cast of characters from across the globe. Tomie's most famous character is Strega Nona, an elderly witch that helps the people of her village. His joyful characters and irresistable stories make his books perfect for sharing with classrooms and grandchildren.

For the mischievous and adventurous reader, Louis Sachar is your man. His work ranges from the hilarious Sideways Stories from Wayside School to the heartwarming tale of Holes. His work is great for students from 3rd grade to middle school.
