The Gag: Teen Vogue Summit

Sharing nothing, but my experience.

Two words. What an amazing experience!

Well, that's not exactly two words, but this calls for a "hashtag, let's talk about it" moment.

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity of a lifetime to volunteer during the Teen Vogue Summit. If anyone knows me, you'll know how much I've gravitated to the growing culture of Conde Nast. Teen Vogue, especially to me isn't just a great magazine with great content. I see it simply as a platform that encourages its followers to participate and get involved. From the diversity of individuals gracing the monthly issues to the latest trends, and exclusive community groups (ItGirls), there is literally so much to look up to.

With that being said, when the time came for me to be a part of this growing company, I jumped right on it.

But, here's the gag, getting the chance to work, was not as easy as you think.

Let me start by saying having the opportunity to work this event wasn't handed to me on a silver platter. I knew I wanted to be a part of something greater, so I worked towards it, in efforts to reach my end goal.

I know that sentence you read was a bit philosophical or rather, vague. But, keep reading, and try to keep up with me!

So like I said. This wasn't one of those situations where someone asked: "Hey, would you be interested in volunteering for this event?" Nope. It was an "If I want to be a part of this experience, I have to reach out to as many people as I need to, in order for the dots to connect" kinda thing.

After sending numerous emails to numerous individuals, someone blindly reached back out and informed me how I can be of assistance. I was later sent a schedule and patiently waited for the set up day, which was May 31st to approach.

"Boy was I thrilled. Me? A part of Teen Vogue? You gotta be kidding me. Like no. Nah, this ain't real. I'm dreaming."

This was no dream.

1 DAY TILL SHOWTIME

May 31st was finally here, and all I could do was smile. I got in touch with Karen, my point of contact, who by the way was great throughout the whole process.

I was immediately put to work and could immediately feel how content I was. Just being in the space physically and mentally made me look forward to the day and rest of the weekend.

While on duty, I connected with Will and Elijah, two Conde Nast employees, who couldn't have come at a better time. They continuously provided me with some really good advice, and truly, there are NO WORDS to describe how appreciative I am of them. Will and Elijah, if you are reading this, just know, the appreciation is real.

Now, to Ms. Tiffany Bender - thank you for allowing me to assist you during your production set of the summit. Completely off book, but thank you for also accepting me and putting me under her wing. In the process, I can't forget Khalia. The connection was instant, and I adored every second we bonded with very much.

SHOWTIME: JUNE 1ST & 2ND

At this point, there isn't really much to say. I experienced it, and this is one of those featured pieces where the memories mean more than the words on the paper. There's no way to really articulate that weekend. I did what I had to, and couldn't be more satisfied with the end results.

I connected with others, accomplished my task at the same time, and now I can sleep peacefully each night knowing the memories belong to me.

Just me.

P.S.: If anyone tells you, you can't accomplish your dream. Don't believe them. Keep pushing.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
