Almost three weeks ago, I realized the excessive amounts of posting I was doing on all forms of social media. I couldn't wait to respond to a Snapchat, I posted any Instagram within five minutes of taking the photo, and I bombarded Facebook with my commentary, thoughts, and ideology.
If I was annoyed with myself, I could only imagine how everyone else was feeling. However, I really flew off the handle after receiving my first ever failing grade on a test. Never in my life had I seen such a low percentage, and I thought I was prepared for that test!
In that moment, I pulled out my phone and deleted all my favorite apps. Snapchat, Instagram, and even going so far as deactivating my Facebook. I was done. Not only did I need all this extra time back on my hands, but I needed the world to miss me again.
It started off pretty easy, but I never realized how much I scroll through these apps without thinking. The hardest app to get rid of, shockingly, was Instagram. I always thought I used Facebook and Snapchat like a fiend, but I never even thought of all the times I would be standing in line or waiting outside a teacher's office where I would just scroll through Instagram to pass the time.
Surprisingly, Facebook was beyond easy to get rid of. The only true hard part of being off Facebook was missing out on group messages for my sorority or other classes, but other than that I really only missed watching Tasty videos during class.
Yet, in the interest of being completely honest, I couldn't completely rid myself of Snapchat. Every so often I would add it back and see who snapped me, but never reply because "that is cheating."
Now that I have all my apps back, I really do appreciate them. They allow me to stay in touch with people that are far away and keep me entertained at all hours.
However, I also learned that I don't need to be entertained at all hours. I can wait a while before opening a Snap, and I don't have to post at every event I attend. To be honest, I learned nobody really cares about anyone else's presence of these media platforms other than their own. So, share away or don't, at the end of the day it's up to you.
