Georgia fell to Auburn Wednesday night with a score of 78-75, marking the team's ninth straight loss. Georgia was outscored 19-4 in second-chance points despite shooting 42.9 percent (9-21) on threes.
Jared Harper led the Tigers with 22 points and 5 assists. Sophomore Chuma Okeke was second in scoring with 13 points as he hit the game-winning three point shot at the end of the game as the Auburn shot clock expired.
As the game neared the closing minutes, Senior Derek Ogbeide and Sophomore Nicolas Claxton stole the show for the Bulldogs. The pair combined for two critical back-to-back blocks before Auburn ultimately took back the lead.
Ogbeide stuffed the stat sheet as he finished with: 13 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks.
Claxton's numbers were 14 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks.
Junior guard Jordan Harris has been enjoying a breakout second half of the season after being inserted into the starting lineup. He finished with a team high 18 points, adding 6 rebounds and 2 assists to go along with it.
With this loss, Georgia falls to 10-18 overall and just 1-14 in conference play.
Georgia's worst ever SEC record was 2-16 in the 1973-74 season with Ken Rosemond as the head coach.
Despite the dismal SEC record, home attendance has been off the charts. Crowd support is crucial to success in the SEC and Georgia fans continue to support the team because of all the hope and anticipation surrounding the program.
The attendance is promising though, as it is likely in correlation with the recruiting class the Bulldogs are bringing in for the next season. That class is highlighted by five-star recruit, and potential number one NBA draft pick, Anthony Edwards.
The SEC is becoming one of the toughest conferences in college basketball, highlighted by seventh ranked Tennessee, fourth ranked Kentucky, and 13th ranked LSU.
The Georgia basketball team is improving but there is still a tough road to competitive status in the conference that has previously been known for only fielding good football teams.
Getting fans to games has proven difficult for the Bulldogs prior to the recent stretch. A home-court advantage is something that is very underrated in college basketball. It is really tough to go into a hostile environment and win, as evidenced by Duke and Tennessee's home stadiums.
Fans getting more and more involved in recent games has certainly helped the team be more competitive. Georgia needs that trend to continue.
