Whether you are a first or second generation Latinx, Italian, Chinese etc, it is important to pass on the gift of bilingualism to your current/future children. There are, of course, individuals whose parents/guardians did not teach them their native language out of fear of them not picking up on English, being picked on in school, or they probably didn't get the chance to learn it.

Despite these fears, an article from the BBC titled "The amazing benefits of being bilingual" by Gaia Venice, says that about 60-75 percent of the world's population speaks at least two languages. Here are some fantastic reasons to pass this on to your children:

1. Health benefits galore

Studies show that learning to speak more than one language prevents dementia later down the line and helps cognitive flexibility. I'm sure I would like to remember most of my memories made when I'm 80.

2. Bilingualism= more money, honey

Being bilingual not only opens more doors in the career world, but that means more money in the pocket.

3. Conversations and jokes won't be as boring

You have more access to conversations, helping out someone who speaks your second language, understanding jokes, and puns in another language. Most of the time translated jokes aren't as funny.

4. One for the culture

Of course, not knowing how to speak let's say Spanish doesn't make anybody any less Hispanic/Latinx, but having that skill under your belt will make you proud of your roots and embrace your culture to the world.

5. Visiting other countries will be a breeze

No need to use Google translate. You can pat yourself on the shoulder.

6. Always room for improvement

Taking a French class could be necessary to improve grammar, but that could also mean an easy A. I mean, why not?

7. Bonding time

If you have relatives that live outside of the country who only speak their native language, your children can strike up a conversation and listen to their childhood stories or learn their Abuela's secret to her famous stew.

8. Memes

The more memes one can understand, the better.

9. More access to entertainment

Knowing more than one language expands your movies, series, songs, and books' list.

10. Learning terms got easier

There are certain English terms that sound similar to other languages. Therefore, it facilitates defining them.

Whether you are expecting children, have children, or plan to have children, it's a great idea to pass this gift onto them. If you don't want to bring other little you's into the world, you can always teach your friends! There are individuals who refuse to expose this to their children, but one should not be afraid or feel shame in having more knowledge. Now go out there and embrace your skill.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
