Unless you've been living under a rock for the past 11 years, I'm sure you're familiar with global-superstar Taylor Swift. Whether you've been a diehard fan since her "Our Song" days, or you're just now hopping on the Swiftie bandwagon, there's absolutely no denying Swift's incredible songwriting skills, and ability to connect with fans of all ages on a personal level. She's sold out concert after concert, broken numerous records with her album sales, and managed to make a graceful transition from country music to pop music, all before the age of 30.
What's next, Taylor? World domination?
Last week, Swift released her sixth studio album "reputation" after having previewed the album with a few released tracks in the weeks prior. In less than five days, the album has sold over 1 million copies. This will be Swift's fourth consecutive album that's sold more than a million copies in less than a week. Even if you aren't a Taylor Swift fan, (which would be preposterous, but whatever) there's no way to discredit her success. Even if you did, I'd like to see your 10 Grammys and million-dollar record deals. It seems as though Swift's career is on a rollercoaster that only goes up.
"reputation" marks Swift's sweet, sweet return to the spotlight after a year and a half long hiatus. Swift's goal seemed to have been keeping her glamorous life as low-key as possible while obviously writing, recording, and producing her new chart-topping album. The album is nothing less than jaw-dropping with a handful of diss-tracks, a few revealing love songs, and a couple girl-power anthems. I smell an album of the year nomination!!!
The album is jam-packed with a few diss-tracks, several revealing love ballads, and a couple girl-power anthems. Swift's debut single from the new album "Look What You Made Me Do" was released a few weeks prior to the album, along with a scandalous music video chock-full with subliminal messages and cryptic symbols just waiting to be dissected and picked apart by Swift's adoring fans. Swift is notorious for loading her songs up with hidden meanings and incandescent accounts of her lavish love life with her various famous ex-boyfriends.
In the new video, there are numerous hidden symbols and messages about some of her most recent controversies, and Swift blatantly puts them all out there, rightfully so. Some of the symbols include a single dollar bill lying with Swift in a bathtub full of jewels, representing the dollar she won in her sexual assault case this past summer, Swift dressed to resemble her famous nemesis, Katy Perry, crashing a luxury car full of Grammys (an award Perry has yet to win herself, Swift has 10), and a tombstone with the name "Nils Sjoberg" inscribed on it, depicting Swift's pseudonym she penned when she wrote ex Calvin Harris's hit song "This Is What You Came For." As the queen of shade-throwing, Swift is surfing through the waves she's made and doing it ever so gracefully.
This album is set to be her most successful yet. Long live The Swift!
