In case you don’t know, Taylor Swift recently won a civil court case against ex-DJ David Mueller who, in 2013, reached under Swift’s skirt and groped her bottom during a photo. After winning the trial, Swift received a symbolic $1 from Mueller because she doesn’t need money, but rather, simply wants to bring light and attention to sexual assault.
To some, this may not seem like a big deal -- women are treated in such a way on a regular basis. However, Swift’s sexual assault trial deserves to be taken seriously and deserves much more attention.
Currently, most sexual assaults in the United States go unreported.
Why?
Is it because of shame and embarrassment?
Is it because of fear of reliving the horrible event?
Is it because the individual doesn’t want to acknowledge that they were sexually assaulted?
Swift’s case is bringing to light that sexual assault needs to be taken seriously. With that being said, her trial has actually brought on a variety of opinions -- from people saying she lied to people attacking her for ‘making a big deal out of nothing.’
Swift’s case is bringing attention to the fact that sexual assault doesn’t just include rape or being forced to partake in a sexual act. Sexual assault is anything from being verbally harassed to being touched in any manner without your permission. Any type of sexual assault is a big deal and it is never ever the victim’s fault.
Some say I am biased because I am a huge fan of hers, but I am proud of Taylor Swift for taking a stand and not backing down, despite wanting to initially.
It is very brave.
Hopefully, it will encourage others of all genders to find their voice and to no longer be taken advantage of. If this small step helps others fight back, perhaps more victims will receive some justice and less perpetrators will get by unpunished.
